Hi, We have had our Chihuahua pup for 3 days now. Woman we got him off didn't crate train him and he's been living with his parents and siblings for 5 months. We tried to get him in his crate first night but he just barked and barked and we didn't want to leave him in that state and we also have neighbours joint on. I waited until he'd stopped barking to let him out and second night he slept in his bed next to our bed, I'm happy with him sleeping in his bed at night as there is nothing in our bedroom that he can hurt himself on and he's too small to jump on our bed. However, we're going to start building up leaving him on his own in the house and we don't want him to have free run of downstairs as there are wires he could chew on, also for his own safety as he is so small! He's also still chewing a bit so we don't want to return to chewed up cushions. I've got him to the stage where he will sit happily in his crate (I've put his bed in it) with the door open and he also ate in it this morning. Every time I try to close the door he either darts out too quickly or starts crying and barking. Am I rushing things too much? And is there any tips and tricks anyone has to keep him calm in his crate? He is also very very attached to me at this stage but seems a bit timid of my partner (male) still. I want him to warm to my partner too as we got a dog we can have together and there'll be times where I might be away and he has to be here with my partner on his own. Am I rushing too quickly? I know the breeders house there was no men. He isn't aggressive towards my partner, just shys away from him and will sometimes hide behind or next to me when my partner is talking loudly on the phone or walking around the room towards him. Any advice for helping this? Thank you.
