A thread to discuss cookery and all the gadgets that none of us need but have to buy! I keep thinking about a Ninja foodie - do I really need it? My larder is already full of unused equipment

How did I miss the soup recipe @BarneyBobCat ? I love soup. Love it.

If you can bear it, could you post the recipe again please (or point me to how far back you posted it and I'll hunt it down!).
I cant find it on here but I did note it down so here you go:

Roasted Red Pepper Soup

Serves 6

Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Large Onion, chopped
  • 2 Carrots, chopped
  • 3 Celery Stalks, chopped
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/4 Tsp Crushed Red Pepper (I used a small amount of chilli flakes)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, Chopped
  • 2 Tbsp Fresh Torn Basil
  • 680g Roasted Red Bell Peppers from a jar, (Drained)
  • 340g Tin Chopped Tomatoes
  • 960g Vegetable Broth
  • Single Cream

Method
  1. Heat the oil in a large heavy pot over a medium heat. Add the onions, carrots and celery and cook until soft, around 5mins. Season with salt, pepper and the crushed red pepper.
  2. Add the garlic, basil, and roasted red peppers and cook for around 2 more minutes.
  3. Add the tinned tomatoes and broth and bring to the boil. Allow to simmer for 30mins.
  4. Turn off the heat, blend until smooth and serve with a little cream and fresh torn basil.

Looks lovely @immum

That reminds me, after Mrs F and BBC posted about their crimpets I saw a deal last week for bogoff direct from Crimpet so 2 for £15.….. ordered for Christmas pressies for my son and his girlfriend (or me if she annoys me 😆)
Oli loves a wrap 😁
I use mine all the time. Any leftovers go in them, sometimes I buy a tin of chilli and put it in, but my favourite is mashing a tin of corned beef with a tin of drained potatoes and voila, corn beef and potato pasties. Bloody lovely

I'm watching McDonald and Dodds on TV. Man cop likes to dip his chips in butter! Yum. I sometimes have a chip buttie and the butter is heavenly. (Woman cop tries to get him to change to marge "for his cholesterol", but his is fine).

Ohhh I thought bubble was green! Like cabbage. Did you have builders tea?

When I worked I always hunted out a decent builders cafe. Here they're often in petrol stations, but I think a step up. Table cloths and everything.

Haha! I loathe hash browns and love 'shrooms. Bubble is a bit of a "thing" in this particular cafe, I could happily not have it though. The fried bread was really good this morning...I could in fairness have fried bread, an egg and black pudding and be perfectly happy.

I'd have the sausage, bacon and any sort of white bread (fried, toasted or plain). And hash browns please. Oh and I've just remembered I eat scrambled eggs now, but I've never had it cooked for me. And no tea or coffee! Hot choc please. If that could be beamed over now please, I'm hungry. (I just did yoga, I'm terrible)

Can anyone tell me what venison is like? Texture, smell and taste? Also what's a pork chop like, say compared to bacon? (I like bacon, but not the fatty bit.)

I'm going to Ireland for a few days, to see family. They know what I'm like with food but still a bit pushy. I get to meet their ginger cat, Reg though!

The best way for me to describe venison is that it's very similar to steak in smell, taste and texture, but leaner. Pork chops don't have a strong taste and are nothing like bacon, not salty either. They are a meaty texture, but can be very dry if overcooked. I love both if they are cooked to my liking. :giggle:

Venison is lovely, but a stronger smell than steak. If it's any help, it was one of Oscar's favourites ;) If it's cooked medium it's beautiful (if it's a venison steak) if you're having diced venison in a casserole, that's also lovely.

Pork chops are nothing like bacon, can be very very firm because obviously it's pork it needs to be cooked through, which makes it a bit hard to chew sometimes! I'd stick to medallions of pork if you have to have pork. I would rather never eat meat again than eat a pork chop :)

I have my pork chops pink, it's totally safe if it's of a good quality, it's so juicy and tender that way. I've had far too many overcooked and dry pork chops during my childhood when everything was cooked to within an inch of its life - yuk!!

The first meal that D's mother ever cooked for me (In December 1991) was a pork chop which I could barely chew, a jacket potato in the microwave and frozen peas. I'd never been presented with such a meal as my mother was a cook - and whilst the food we ate wasn't fancy, it was certainly nice to eat. Unlike the bouncy pork chop. Of course, nobody spoke to me at the dinner table until I'd finally managed to hack a piece of chop off and start to chew it. And chew. And chew. And...you get the picture. The his grandad asked me a question and I had to swallow it practically whole. Urgh! I'm having flashbacks now, even as I type. Then we had butterscotch Instant Whip which was quite literally hideous. Oh goodness.

I still don't want a pork chop though...

Venison is lovely. It’s just like lean beef (steak).

I can’t abide pork unless it’s bacon. The smell makes me feel sick. I think it’s because my Mum used to cook roast pork every Sunday and the smell of a dirty oven and burning pork is yuck!
Agreed on both counts. Do like a bit of venison on occasion (as long as I don’t think of Bambi), but I find pork an absolutely vile meat.
Pork in cider used to be the family thing and saying you didn’t like it wasn’t a good enough reason not to have it.
Until one day I literally retched at the table and they finally got the message.
There was a similar occurrence with liver and that was also removed from my diet after years of suffering lol.
It wasn’t childish theatrics, it really did make me gag.
Even today I can’t stand the smell of liver 🤢
