A thread to discuss cookery and all the gadgets that none of us need but have to buy! I keep thinking about a Ninja foodie - do I really need it? My larder is already full of unused equipment

Well, something terrible has happened. I think I've gone off steak, usually my absolute favourite! 😩 We stopped at Tebay Services farm shop 3 weeks ago, to stock up, on the way home from holiday in Scotland and I had a lovely sirloin on the bone that evening. Unfortunately, in the early hours, I came down with the sickness and 💩 bug that my husband had while we were away and all the lot came back (sorry if you're squeamish)! I tried the below sirloin at weekend, which I'd frozen, and I struggled to eat it. I actually felt quite sick after it. I'm quite shocked and a bit gutted, especially as I had to freeze a Tebay T-bone too when I was ill, as I couldn't even look at it. I don't know if I'll ever be able to face it! Think I need counselling!! 😯

It transpired I had a gastric infection and coincidentally ate a curry the day after it was all starting…I vommed in a bush after a postnatal visit after running down several flights of stairs in a tower block. I thought I was going to be sick on their floor.

I ate only beige food for several months. It took me close to six months to eat anything non beige and I started with carrots, peas and tomatoes.

I cannot go into a curry house even now and that was easily 12 years ago!

I bought one of these last week, I remember my dad using one when I was a child in the 70s.

I gave it a try last night to make some thin fries to go with the piri piri chicken. Did them in beef dripping (would have been rude not to) and they are probably the best fries I've ever had! It comes with two sizes of cutter so you can make thicker chips too.

Pppffffft. I've decided I'm never buying cucumber again. Urgh. I dislike them so much!

Here's a tale for you. We had friends here this weekend, then extra friends came for dinner...well, I was making Bahian curry which called for two tins of coconut milk. I may have been a touch tiddly. Maybe. Ahem. I opened one and chucked it in the pan, opened the next and thought, "Why is my coconut milk orange?"...almost chucked it in the pan in my tiddly state but didn't. Read the side and it was beans 🤣

So we had beans on toast for tea tonight when I got home late from work.

Good job I'd made the meringue nest fake Eton mess pudding before I was tiddly, all that strawberry chopping!

I got given a random overgrown courgette today. Cut it in half and gave half to my neighbour. Part roasted it in big slices then added a sort of bolognese (mince and lentil and veg) to it then topped with cheesy breadcrumbs. It was surprisingly tasty but I have realised you really can’t eat the skin lol!

Random 2am thought.....those of you that drink alcohol and then eat...does food taste different?
I remember friends getting kebabs when drunk that they said they'd never normally eat. It's never a nice, healthy salad though is it, so maybe it would be no help to me.

My diet has been spectacularly dreadful over the summer, lived off crisps and ice cream for 3 months. Been the hottest summer ever. When the hottest part broke a week ago (down to 30) I tried sweetcorn again and garden peas. Unfortunately neither would stay down. I did manage some green beans, found some very young frozen ones, but haven't dared try them again. Feeling a bit despondent about it all.

To end on a positive note, all your food photos look like food. Which is amazing to me.

Oh @Jaf I’m sorry you’ve had a tough summer with food. You’ve just got to keep trying, it’s all you can do. Don’t force it though. There’s something about toddlers when having new foods needing to try a food ten times before they can actually decide they don’t like it, don’t know if that’s similar for you?

As for food and alcohol, that’s when I eat more crisps! I don’t “get” the glass of wine with food thing as I think both taste worse. I like a kebab with or without alcohol though, to be fair. I would often eat weird pizza combos though if I was drunk (like have tuna and sweetcorn on a pizza). I’m quite brave with food generally, though I always turn to beige in times of illness.

I wish I could help. I’m sad you have this battle involving something that you need to do every day.
