Hello this is my first time here, around Christmas my friend got a new kitten and since then we have been very curious about what exactly his most dominant breed is as from what we can both tell he is definitely not a regular breed, and this idea has been reinforced by our local vets. We cant contact the person who he got the kitten off of to ask them so we were really hoping that somebody here would be able to help.

    Thanks in advance

He is a Domestic Shorthair aka a moggie. Handsome mackerel tabby markings on him.

He's not of any specific breed, but he has some very beautiful markings! You'd call him a Domestic Shorthair or a "moggie".

I always thought this was herringbone & the ones with darker splodges were mackerel, not that it makes the slightest difference, have had both & adored them equally. Your cat is a gorgeous moggie

Speaking with my showing hat on, there is no such pattern marking as 'herringbone' tabby :) This is definitely Mackerel, which refers to the pattern only, not the colour.

My Lorelei is a DSLH Black (Brown) Tortie Tabby under TICA :)

This is a good page for explaining the different types of tabby markings and colours:

Thank you so much. The Scientist in me just loved it! Who knew so much went into a few spots & stripes!, so Poppy is a classic tabby DLH & white. Data was a classic tabby DSH & white. My old lad Trio was a mackerel striped DSH & Wriggle is a ticked tabby DSH all black (brown) That is nearly a full house of Tabbies :)

Heh thanks guys, it''s my friends cat but I helped him to get him and train him, his name is Meow-meow (bit weird I know but we couldn't settle on any sort of normal name haha). His behaviour is one of the main reason's we thought there was a chance he could have has some exotic breed in his lineage, he is so much more energetic, curious, impulsive and playful than any cat that either of us has ever had before, he also has a fairly unique meow that sort of reverberates and he makes a weird clicking sound while vibrating his mouth when my friend points at him and makes a noise.

He is ridiculously cute and playful, very loving too (though mostly just to my friend heh) I'm just not sure how to burst his bubble about him not being exotic :)

Not necessarily. My Lori is a moggy, but a very vocal, playful, zoomy nutter. That's the joy of Mogs, they are so variable and unique :)

Exotics like Persians are rather lazy cats....not very vocal either.
    Here is.my Garfield.

Yours is a lovely DSH, reminds me of my DSH Agata...long time ago.
She was very active, playful cat.

Aww, what a very cute kitten! :) It is always possible he has some genes from a pedigree breed in his lineage, but it would be impossible to say which. He has quite a short nose which is a similar type to BSH, but his ears are not BSH ears, and nor is the shape of his face as it is too pointy to be a BSH.

It sounds as though your friend has a unique, intelligent, very special cat with a great personality ! :)

More photos would be lovely! :)
