My Dad saw a black butterfly or moth in his garden today.

After some googling I found out about the Winter moth, but it's not that.

Any ideas what it could be?

It was settled, I'll see if I can get the photos on here tomorrow (they are very blurred though), but it looks black with maybe brown markings?

Chimney sweeper moth is black and looks like a butterfly but isn't usually about now
    Or try Grey Dagger

I was wondering if it could be the Chimney sweeper, but this one looks like it has markings which have really thrown me. Sorry they are so blurry, these were the best photos I was sent. It looks almost really dark purple to me, but I've been told it's defiantly black.

That’s very odd looking. The faded white patches on the wings make it look like a small tortoiseshell butterfly, but the black colour is wrong. I wonder if it’s some kind of colour morph
    Off to google

Any luck finding out what it might be?

    I know it's a long shot.

    Thank you for looking.

Guess this one will remain a mystery.

It looks a bit battered. I wonder if it's a non native that's been bought in on the wind?

We did wonder if that might be the case.
