Hi, for clarity, I didn't say they were small goldens, I just said they look a bit like a small golden. You could be right about their energy levels, the one I know is an old boy.
Maybe I misunderstood but you said "their a bit like a Golden" so I took that as you were saying their like a Golden in temperament as you didn't say look like a Golden you said like a Golden.

Sorry I misunderstood but wanted OP to know their nothing like a Golden at all

I know goldens are generally cited as being not prone to excessive barking, but from personal experience I have to disagree with this. I don't know if it's a recent phenomenon, but we've had so many barky goldens in classes and 121 sessions.

If you want a small/medium sized dog with low shedding then poodles are great little dogs. Would quite like one myself.

I don't have hands on experience of Goldens like @rona and @Siskin but all the Goldens I've been around which is hundreds over the years all except one was quiet even on a golden walk I recently went on with my daughter no barking at all.

Again maybe the ones you've seen are bred from bad breeders or from barky parents or their owners haven't discouraged the barking.

Goldens in general are a quiet breed

Quite possibly from questionable breeders, however I would not say that it's been to do with training as all owners have desperately tried to discourage barking. We have had several who barked their way through classes almost constantly and we had to really help out their owners to manage them. Just sharing my own personal observations.

I'd say either bad breeders or from barky lines then as the majority of Goldens are quiet dogs they'd be rubbish at their job if they barked all day long.

You also don't know what they are like at home they may have encouraged this behavior without realizing at home. But no dog barks for no reason especially goldens.

My breed huskies get a bad rep for being barky but not one of mine has ever been a barker because I discouraged it from day one

I totally agree they'd be rubbish at their job if they barked, and it's clearly not a desirable breed trait, just one that I have noticed a lot recently.

The ones I have known I don't think have been barky at home, more so when out and about.

We've had a few huskies in our classes and I don't recall any of them being that vocal tbh.

Hmmm wonder if it's a behavior thing as in reacting to outside either excitement or fear.

Not fear, usually it's been demand barking or out of excitement.
They should ignore the barking when their demanding something no eye contact either just completely ignore it and they'll soon learn that barking doesn't get them what they want.

In terms of excitement they need to teach impulse control and teach them again that barking ends the excitement

Thanks. We are qualified trainers/behaviourists so know how to help them (ignoring doesn't always work), but thank you for the suggestions. I was just commenting to share my personal experience of goldies not necessarily being quiet dogs :)

If you know how to help them then you should know how to stop the barking being excessive but it depends on how much they are listening to your advice when your not their , depends if they put the effort in when your not their I know a few who don't bother when the trainer is not their because they lost patience.

I know I'm no expert and my point was that just because you've know a few who are usually noisy that doesn't mean as a breed Goldens are excessive barkers when in fact goldens are the opposite of what you've experienced.

And theirs going to be a reason for why they are excessive barkers in the first place

Ok

I think this must be the case

Goldens are like naughty school boys, if they can get away with it they will. They like nothing better than to test the water.
It's one of their charms and one of their frustrating traits at the same time  :)

You really have to embrace the Golden or you will either shut them down or have what seems like a rebellious toddle on your hands.

I love the cheeky naughtiness within them

They are lovely dogs. They are still on my list of potential future dogs, even after a few of them have almost deafened me

Thanks rona , I think I've annoyed sairy with keep going on about it but after my daughter was put off by some who said their barky when their not and then when I asked on here and was told their not barky and now she's decided to go for a golden I suppose I just don't like a whole breed being classed as something their not just because of a few when theirs a reason those few are in the first place.

Sorry sairy if I annoyed you

The thing is, there may be breedlines in that area who are noisy, just like there are Golden breedlines with iffy temperaments. People just aren't careful enough when choosing.

There use to be a weimaraner breeder in my area that bred very dangerous dogs. Had quite a few run ins with that line and heard of others that had the same.
I thought that that's what Weimy's were like once they hit maturity, but others said not ..............

Well since the can is open and the worms are out...
In the US there are many barky goldens. Got to any dog show and sit near the golden ring, just make sure you have on ear plugs. Yep, demand barking, some anxiety too. These are not dogs bred to work all day on a hunt, they're bred for the ring, so there's that...

But the more concerning thing for me that you see in spaniels a lot, labs and goldens less but still something to consider - resource guarding. Not the usual resource guarding that a few swaps and treats will solve, but weird, genetic, OTT resource guarding where people are getting badly bitten over a box of tissues or some other random object that the dog didn't care about until that second.
If the breeder can't/won't talk about resource guarding and what the incidence of it is in their lines, walk away.

That said, I do have a soft spot for a good goldie, the good ones are really special dogs. But I'd still go for a well bred lab over a goldie (ducks and hides :D )
