    Hi,

I am preparing to breed my French bull dog and would like to know what I need for her to be as safe and successful as possible. Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Best thing would be to have a couple of grand in the bank, to cover the costs of an out of hours C-section (even if she's from self-whelping lines); and that's AFTER doing all the pre-breeding health tests.
There should be a spinal X-ray and evaluation, and a heart check by a cardiologist, then these DNA tests:
    • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).
    • Hereditary Cataracts (HC-HSF4).
    • Canine Multifocal Retinopathy 1 (CMR1)
    • Congenital Hypothyroidism - French Bulldog Type (CHG-FB)
    • Hyperuricosuria (HUU)
    • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA-PRCD)

Pregnancy, whelping, rearing pups is uncomfortable (even painful) for any bitch. Mating can be, too. If you want her to be comfortable, don't breed her.

Would have though a couple of grand might not be enough for potential OOH vet fees, plus you need to be able to fund looking after her and raising her pups (including any necessary vet visits) until they are old enough to leave. I breed cats which are cheaper at the vets, I wouldn't if I only had £2k in the bank.

She is KC registered? She isn't endorsed as 'Progeny not eligible for registration'?

Given all the above … neutering seems the best idea for the dog and any future progeny.

    Is she worth breeding?
Be absolutely honest with yourself: what are your reasons for wanting to breed her?
