bacterial-meningitis often hits college-students, which of course is not only dangerous, but even if they survive,

like all ITISes, it is an inflammation - in this instance of the meninges, which is the thin wrapper of the brain + spinal-cord.
the fever + pressure produced by meningitis can cause seizures, coma, death, brain-damage, deaf/blind, or paralysis...
like anything else which attacks the CNS/central nervous system.
very scary stuff... if a child gets a fever + complains of a stiff NECK or cries when their head is moved,
GO * TO * THE * Dr or Hospital immediately - neck-pain is nasty sign.
