why do some people put their bitches at greater risk of whelping complications?? surely whelping is risky enough when the same breeds are used for the mating but when a different breed stud is used which is a bigger & more solidly built then the bitch the risks are much greater, im really shocked that some breeders see nothing wrong with this:confused:

I agree. I think I may have posted this on here already, on another thread - if so, apologies - but my niece (who is a vet nurse) was really upset the other week when they had to deal with a springer bitch who had been mated with a labrador - she had to have a C section, the pups all died and she nearly died too :( Why deliberately put your girl at risk like that?

Because there are a lot of really stupid, inconsiderate, greedy owners out there, who feel the need to try & think up ever more outrageous crossbreed dogs with no regard to the welfare of their bitch or the puppies

I would assume those who do this don't really have a clue what they're doing.

So, to make a generalisation (which I may get jumped for ) I think it's BYBs and puppy farmers who do this.

A person I know has an entire Basset and a little unspayed Yorkie X Dachshund and despite my dire warnings, still hasn't had either of them done. Madness.

I agree responsible breeders are knowledgable never to do this. This is why larger chi bitches are more sought after than the smaller ones on the show/ breeding circuit. The idea of "teacup chihuahuas" are ridiculous not only don't they exist, but they are risking the lives of the bitches by pputting them in whelp :(

Because they honestly don't *care* about their dogs, they might provide food, water, a place to sleep, but they are unaware other than the bare minimum what their dog needs, what might harm them etc

My last Oldie, Chloe, was overweight and underexercised when she came to me, it took a while, but she eventually came round and wasn't too bad health wise, mentally was another issue. I'm sure if you asked her original owners they would have thought they were taking the best care possible, but then they were also the people who handed her in to be pts, and she went on to have a good 18 months life afterwards with me.

I think a lack of knowledge and common sense plays a big part of it..

Its not just the size... but also head shape.... imagine a greyhound bitch and bullmastiff dog mating ... thats also asking for trouble I`d imagine :confused1:

Lack of knowledge or they simply don't care because surely it's common sense that you have a tiny bitch mated with a much larger breed there are going to be problems.

I've seen a DDB x Shar Pei, for £100!!! Bloody ridiculous IMO.

I also know someone through a friend who will use AI to breed ANY dog you ask for!.

If the bitch is smaller than the dog then it's certain she'll have a C section, and we're all aware of the complications of having one of those, then there's the health risks to the pups and lord knows what else will lie in store for the poor things! Talk about barbaric
