In our front garden up against the wall of the house we have a hardy Fuchsia which has formed quite a big bush. I think its one of these

Last year we noticed a couple of branches of it coming from around the window frame of the nearest window so we pulled them out. This year they were back and OH realised they were actually coming out of the cavity wall so as we were due to have our windows replaced and he would be able to get to the cavity we left it knowing we would deal with it then. We also noticed some foliage growing out of the side of the soil vent pipe at roof level which we planned to deal with when the scaffolding was up for the windows. Finally last week when moving some furniture in the lounge we came across a branch of the same stuff which had pushed its way round the cover/panelling to the rising main :Jawdrop it was like something out of Day of The Triffids. OH went up in the loft and pulled out loads of tubular like roots - the Fuchsia had grown into the foundations and up the cavity wall, exiting at any sources of light on its way. We have removed all the bits we could find - a handful of the tubules from the cavity wall around the window and sprayed with weed killer. I had no idea Fuchsias did this. Unfortunately the whole bush is going to have to go.

Nor did I :Jawdrop I've been googling and can't find any references to it doing this but the branches we pulled out all over the house are definitely from the bush in the front garden, I'm just not totally sure whether its the variety I have linked to but I think it is.

Blimey!

Good job you moved the furniture eh?

I remember the house I lived in as a child had wisteria growing up the front of the house, every year it would invade my bedroom, I loved it and was always sad when Dad cut it back. (By the way it was just a branch that would find its way in via my open window, nothing like what you are dealing with)

I think plants will invade if there is a gap anywhere, a bit like ivy. Whilst they may not actually create a hole or crack, if they find one then they are likely to grow towards a light source.

I had a similar problem with an ivy on the shed - it found gaps between the wall and roof and grew it's way in! The stems continue to thicken as they grow which then causes the cracks/hole to expand.
