Both are beautiful breeds of Shepherd but what are the main differences between Belgian shepherds and German shepherds temparment and health wise?

Which breed to do you prefer?

Love to know your thoughts. :)

Well they are all beautiful breeds in their own right.

When you say Belgium Shepherd which do you mean - Mal - Terv - Gron - etc?

I understood that the Belgians are slightly lighter/smaller than the German in general but could be wrong. I grew up with the German as my dad bred them from the 1930's to 1960's and they were fabulous. I don't know much about them now though.

I have no experience or knowledge, but I always thought they looked similar, but the Belgian was more slender in frame and looked abit more elegant so to speak

I prefer the teuveron and the long coated black one can never spell it. The laekenois looks pretty good too

When I think of a Belgian shepherd I picture the Groenendael/Tervuren in my mind.

All the types are lovely but I do like the longer coated variety.:)

I see lots of people on here that own GSD's but not many Belgian shepherd owners and I wanted to see peoples views on them!

Thanks to those who have posted so far! :D

I prefer the GSD, but have friends with the Belgians and they are nice to know, friendly and quiet. I just prefer the larger more chunky breeds, lol!

Cant say i have looked into the breed in depth, But I Love the Groenendael.

Some time in the future i hope to get one. :D but not for atleast another
5-10 years as this breed needs an experienced handler i assume. :)

Gsd's are nice too,but again i havent looked into them in depth either.

Although everytime i look at german sheperds, the black long haired ones steal my heart! :001_wub:

But given the choice i would deffinatly get a Groenendael as previously said I hope to get one in the future.

I prefer the look of the Belgium shepherds to GSD's, but i don't know much about the breed. My ex's mum had 2 Malinois, 1 Groenendael & 1 Tervuren and i thought they were all lovely, she did agility with the Malinois the others were in their senior years.

Shhh...Belgian Shepherds are a well kept secret ;) - beautiful , with very few health problems they can turn their elegant paw to almost any doggy activity - they give the Border Collies a run for their money in Agility, Obedience, Fly ball, Cani X etc etc and their good looks make them excellent show dogs no work/show split with BSD - (apart from some working Malinois lines ! ) - there's a coat type to suit everyone .

the Tervueren - red or grey long coat with a black mask and black overlay

    The Groenendael - Longhaired Black

the Malinois - smooth haired red or fawn - black mask and over lay

and the Laekenois wire coated fawn

Overshadowd by their more popular cousins the GSD and much harder to find ( Registrations for BSD in the last quarter was 93 compared to 2229 GSD !) this has meant that the breed remains safely in the hands of breed enthusaists and almost all pups come from health tested parents and are responsibly bred ( we all know each other !!! ) -Sensitive and highly intelligent they do need lots of socialising as pups and they will keep themselves occupied if not given something to do - (often in ways you'ld rather they did'nt ) - they are supremely easy to train and originally were used as living fences so have a natural tendency to circle their owners when out - recall is not a problem with BSD - the don't let their owners out of their sight !

I've had this wonderful breed for over 25 years and for me there is quite simply no other breed that compares - trouble is that most people cannot stop at one !

What a great post! Thank you!

They are very elegant looking dogs. A friend of mines Mother breed Belgians and I know that she is very dedicated to them.

As someone that has always wanted a GSD and doesn't know that much about BSD's I wanted to start this thread.

Thanks to all the posts, I now know a bit more!;)
