Last night, when I was grumping and wishing that I didn't have to work when everyone else was having a bank holiday, some gremlin must have been listening and decided to grant my wish. Just as we were all clustered around the TV in the office, watching the kiss on the balcony, I got a call to say my OH had been taken by ambulance into A&E and so I left work at just after 1.30 to go to him - not what I meant about not working the bank hol at all :(

He had terrific pains down his leg - he couldn't breath because of the pain and they had to give him a tramadol injection before they could even examine him. Several hours, x-rays and blood tests later they still don't know what is wrong with him - sciatica is the tentative diagnosis but the doctor said his symptoms weren't really typical of sciatica at all.

He's now on a cocktail of tramadol, co-codamol 30/500 and diclofenac, and is still in pain, but at least it's bearable now if he doesn't move.

So be careful what you wish for - it just might come true :(

Thanks for your kind words everyone. He's at home with me - they didn't keep him in. They hummed and hawed about it, and then decided that as there were no beds and he'd have to stay on a trolley in the assessment bay, he'd be better off at home.

Trouble is, it hurts worse when he lays down - so goodness knows how he's going to get to sleep tonight, poor sausage. They said if the drugs don't keep the pain at bay, or if his waterworks or bowels stop working, then I have to phone 999 and get him back to the hospital - but otherwise he has to go to his GP when they open on Tuesday.
