Has anyone used either of these for a dog with inflammatory bowel disease and, if so, what results did you have?

    Hi Rafa,

I can't help with your question sorry but McKenzie has just been diagnosed with IBD and is on Salazopyrin (as well as prescription diet and digestive supplements).

    How do you manage Rosie's?

Well, Rosie has been on Prednisalone, with a strict diet, for 9 years now.

    Her IBD is very severe.

I have a blood test done every six months, to test her liver function, and up to now, it's been fine. However, she was tested on Monday and her liver enzyme levels are raised, (apparently).

The Vet wants to take her off the steroids and try treating her with Apoquel or Atopica.

Now, I would love for her to be able to manage without steroids, the long term effects really worry me, but I'm equally concerned that her flare ups will begin and she will be in severe pain again.

I have agreed to try and, as of Tuesday, she has had Apoquel instead of Prednisalone. So far, so good, but have to admit I'm worried for her and wondered if anyone else had had a good result with Apoquel/Atopica.

Oh poor girl. I'm glad it's going well so far. Elliot has had Apoquel for seasonal allergies but I had no idea it could be used for IBD too. Hope it continues to go well.

    Thank you.

Rudi is on Apoquel for allergies too. I think using it for IBD is something of a 'try it and see' exercise by my Vet, but everything crossed.

Does the Salazopyrin work for McKenzie?

It's too soon to tell really, she's only been on it 2 and a half days, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Hers presents as a very sore tummy after breakfast (mostly). She's just had breakfast so we will see what today brings.

My cat with IBD was treated with Atopica on the advice of specialists at Langford. It failed to help so they increased the dose after checking how much of the drug he was absorbing. The higher dose also failed to make a difference.

I've since made two changes which have helped. First I moved him to a raw diet which gradually reduced his vomiting to about half its previous level. I've also recently introduced this product.https://www.bioiberica.com/en/products/animal-health/medicina-interna/entero-chronic. The Entero chronic has led to another significant improvement however my cat is not keen on the taste. HTH

From what I gather about Apoquel it blocks the pathways that cause itching and inflammation. So I would have thought it would have some effect on other inflammation issues?

I think this is what my Vet is hoping for.

I really hope so for Rosie.

I will keep you posted on whether it works for her.

    I'm very unsure right now.

Can’t comment on the ibd but I started my staffy on apoquel about 3 weeks ago and it’s like her allergies have disappeared.

She was a scratcher from day one, she made her skin sore, lost hair, chewing paws etc and must of just been stressful all the time(it deffo was for me lol), since giving her the apoquel, the thin patches of hair are starting to grow back, her skin is healing and she’s stopped the constant digging at her skin.

Like you it was either this or steroids, after being told about the damage long term use of steroids I decided to go with apoquel, but there’s not much out there about the long term use of this stuff, but the vet reckons it’s much better than steroids.

I hope it works out well for your dog like it has mine :D

Another cat experience here as opposed to dog. My friend’s cat had a rare form of colitis and couldn’t take steroids because it gave him diabetes. He was put on Atopica and Leukeran and it worked wonders for him curing his colitis.
