A CONMAN who kept thousands of pounds after posing as a charity representative in South Yorkshire has been denounced by organisations he ripped off.
Sheffield Crown Court heard Simon Edwards, aged 48, pocketed at least £39,817 after approaching people in town and city centres claiming to support animal rights charities.

He was jailed after pleading guilty to six counts of fraud and one of obtaining property by deception.

At a subsequent confiscation hearing, Judge Roger Keen QC ordered Edwards to pay back £10,800 unde the Proceeds of Crime Act or face a nine-month jail sentence.

Police hope some of the money will now find its way to the charities.
One victim was Uncaged UK, based on Leopold Street, Sheffield, which opposes hunting and scientific experimentation on animals.

Founder Angela Roberts said: "I am absolutely gutted and many other people will feel the same way. It's really shocking to think anybody could do what he has done.

"People are rightly concerned about animal welfare issues and for him to prey upon that concern for his own benefit is appalling.

"I am disgusted at how much money he stole and how long it was going on before he was caught."

Edwards, now of Leek in Staffordshire, also claimed to be collecting for Vegetarians International Voice for Animals, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, and Countdown to Abolition.

Bristol-based Vegetarians International Voice for Animals campaigns manager Justin Kerswell said: "It is despicable this one individual has taken money from people who thought they were helping promote our campaigns, especially when money is tight for all and donations have dropped for many groups.

"He has essentially stolen from those that are often helpless – the animals themselves."
