I've been having a little break from the forum (it's amazing what you can get done when you're not wasting time on here!) but I know a few people wanted to know how Kenzie is doing.

McKenzie has had stomach issues since about the beginning of the year, mainly to do with huge amounts of gas in her tummy causing pain. She was a bit of a mystery case, and between my vet and a second opinion vet, she tried pretty much every type of drug and nothing had any effect.

Yesterday she went in for an ultrasound and more x-rays with my second opinion vet (she already had 2 sets of x-rays with my original vet).

The ultrasound showed only a small amount of bowel inflammation, which was surprising, and explains why so many of the drugs we tried didn't work! Unfortunately the x-rays showed a 'thickening' in one spot which worried my vet. The x-rays have been sent away to be read by a specialist, which will take a few days. Obviously I'm on tenterhooks because if there is a mass on her bowel it could be cancerous, but I'm trying not to freak out too much because there's lots of things it can be without it being cancer. But either way, if the specialist agrees there's something there I think it probably means surgery for her.

Kenzie had to be sedated for the ultrasound and she's never done well with sedation/anaesthetic so she's battling her way through it! And she has a little bit of clipper burn which is irritating her. The poor girl has been very clingy so we've had a very quiet day today and she's starting to look a bit brighter :)

Please cross your fingers for us while we wait for results.

Oh poor little love, she's such a sweetie, it's awful when they're not happy.
Everything crossed here that it is in fact one of the many other things and not cancerous.
We will be thinking of you.
    Please keep us updated.

And I absolutely agree with you on how much one can get done when the computer goes away for a bit, which is why I only come on for a while first thing in the mornings while I'm having my first couple of cups of coffee and waiting for my tablets to kick in. I'd never get anything done otherwise!

Sending lots of love to Mckenzie.

Oh dear, that is worrying, praying that it's something fixable.
She does look sorry for herself, poor little poppet! I'm so pleased you popped back with an update though.

    Thanks for the update.

Try not to worry currently, easier said than done I know. While it's always good to have a heads up on these things, and have the worse case scenario this is what are brain tends to focus on.

Love to you and McKenzie, and Elliot of course

Poor girl. I hope she feels better soon and it is something sortable. At least you know there is something causing it now which has to be good news.

I know what you mean about the computer, it is a dreadful time waster. I have only just come on the forum today because I have been sorting out my electricity provider and trying to buy a fridge to replace the one that is not getting very cold! Have to say that all seems a waste of my time too so will go and walk dogs now.

When will you get the results?
What I can't work out is why a thickening of the wall of the gut should produce gas.

I suspect that rather than produce gas the thickening is trapping some of it causing a build up,bowel distension and pain.

Yes, possible if the thickened area is big enough and surrounds a significant part of that section of the bowel.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, I really appreciate it. It's the weekend now so I won't hear anything until early next week but I will let you know when I do.

Oh her symptoms are strange, for sure. That's why we've spent the last 9 months trying every type of drug under the sun.

I've only spoken to the vet on the phone since the x-rays were taken so I don't have a lot of information, but there are a couple of possibilities.

There is a type of benign tumour that has gas as a symptom. Alternatively the mass could be affecting her bowel motility, leading to food sitting around too long and causing gas. Or we could just be really unlucky and the mass could be 'extra' and not actually related to the gas problem at all. But as I say, I haven't had a proper appointment about this yet so I'm still in the dark really.
