My MTS kicked in again and I picked up a second hand tank a few days ago, from googling it looks like an Interpet Aquaverse 65L, which I figure is closer to 60L once substrate is added.

The current plan is to go with my naturally soft water and set up a blackwater tank, with a decent sized shoal of some tiny fish. Top of the list at the moment is Ember Tetras, so I'm just wondering how people generally figure out how many fish is acceptable for a specific sized tank? How many Embers (or similar sized fish) would be ok in 60L? I probably won't be wanting to add any other fish as I'm quite keen on having just as big a shoal as I can of the one species. And maybe some shrimp for the bottom. What do you guys think?

The tank has been scrubbed out and I've just painted a black background on today, so it's not set up or cycled yet and will be a while before it's ready for fish.

You could have a decent shoal in there. An internal filter rated for the size of the tank would give you 60cm per litre. Overfilter and you can add another 5cm. As Embers max out at 2cm, you're looking at about 30 fish.

Oh that's great, that's more than I was expecting! I don't want to stock it too heavily, but I was worried that 20 would be pushing it! Thanks :)

Day 4 into the cycle and I think I have a slight hint of nitrites. Added lots of plants in the hope at least some will survive! The lighting is quite low so I'm not sure how well they'll do, but fingers crossed  It's not quite blackwater yet, just a couple of catappa leaves in the bottom so far, but the plan is to add more to it to create that nice 'tea stained' look :)

    Looking good.

Tip; Alder cones release even more tannins than Indian Almond leaves. ;)

Yes! I need to get some alder cones. I have some alder trees near me, I suppose I could collect some though I'd probably have to wait til autumn. Am I right in thinking I can use oak leave too? Assuming they are clean of any nasties?

Yup, you can use oak leaves, as long as they're clean.

This might give you some ideas, too.
