Hissing cats

Hi,

Does anyone have any good tips for stopping my older cat hissing at my kitten?

Gracie is the mum of the kitten Tigger and Gracie has been hissing at Tigger ever since she came back from the vets on Thursday after being neutered. Before they got on fine and Gracie would always tolerate Tigger's kitten play even the times when it looked like she was trying to ride on her back!!!

So far, thank god, there have been no fights just the odd warning swipe from Gracie. I have tried stroking them both with the same hand to transfer smells and rubbing down with a towel etc.

I know it will take time (fingers crossed) but concerned that things may never get better so wondered if anyone had any tips to help the situation along?

Unfortunately Gracie probably knows that Tigger isn't entire and this will automatically put Gracie at the bottom of the pecking order as it were, sometimes it can work itself out so don't lose heart but certainly watch closely and see how they go. Because more often than not (imo) when their is a girl or boy who's neutered the entire cats see them as pointless as in -They eat my food, they fill my toilet and take my cuddle/play time and they can't even have "honeymoon" time with me or produce babies-what are they still doing here. Sorry to put it like that but thats pretty much how some cats see it-but as i said not all cats so fingers crossed that these 2 work it out,if they don't it can be damaging to both especially the neuter's well being and happiness and quality of life as in they have none and they become unhappy. Just a thought Poppyrog, see how it goes-good luck as i know it can't be easy:)

thanks for your reply really appreciate it, makes a lot of sense. Gracie is neutered too.

Gracie seems to have calmed down a bit now and is not doing it so often, it appears like she just wants to be on her own like she is saying 'your a big kitty now, leave me alone!' Tigger doesn't seem to care about the hissing. As always its the owners that worry more about it than them

One of lifes little mysteries!

Thanks once again.

Hi poppyrog,
I would just sit it out if i was you. Some cats can act different when another family cat as had some think done or been away. I myself had a similar problem with a mother and daugther, and it took 3 or 4 months for things to get back to normal, but i knew it would with time.
