New kitten trouble.

Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me. Well i have been talked into getting a few more kittens than what i was intending to so have now ended up with 4 rather than 2. Thats not the problem tho as i thought long and hard before i took on the other two but thought they were better off with me where i knew i could give them a good home rather than with someone that might not.

Any how the two females have started to poo and wee behind the telly. I have two litter trays and was going to move one behind the telly but i dont really want to encourage them to go to the loo behind there. I have cleaned throughly with bio washing powder and even rinsed with a bit of lemon floor cleaner (its carpet behind the telly).

Any suggestions please as i really dont want a house to smell of cat wee and poo.

Many thanks Julie

I wouldn't place one behind the television, unless you are happy to have it there for the rest of their lives

You may find that you need more litter trays, some cats will share, some will not. Four kittens is quite a handful and trays will need cleaning more than once a day, some cats will not use a tray once they have pooped in it, never mind another cat!

If I were you I would restrict kittens access to rooms unsupervised.

If you feel 4 kittens may be more than you bargained for, consider asking local rescues if they can help place them in great homes. It's lovely that you took them because you were concerned, so up to you if you REALLY want four :)

They all get on so well so yeah think im going to try and stick it out with all four. If i need to get more litter trays then so be it and no i dont really want them going behind the telly for ever but dont want them to keep pooing on the carpet either lol.

I know its early days as they have only been here for a few days so im just kinda cleaning it up and showing them where the other litter trays are.

I do clean the litter trays as soon as they have done a number 2 in one as im paranoid about my house smelling.

Any other suggestions would be great. Will try and block access to the back of the telly when they have stopped running round like idiots lol

Yep how old are the kittens? I tend to imagine if you were talked into taking them theyre gonna be pretty young, in that case they really need to be taught to use the tray.

I would put a tray behind the telly, then when they consistently use a tray, move the tray slowly, and block off behind the tele for a time. They should get used to it in time.

Age is a factor though.

With a litter of 4 kittens I would say you will probably need at least 6 litter trays. If it turns out that you have 4 cats that will only use their own tray AND they turn out to prefer to use one for peeing and one for pooping, then you might need 8! plus a couple of spare

Best thing to do to stop them peeing or pooping anywhere you don't want the to (behind the TV) is to block those areas off. Cardboard and parcel tape became my best friends for a while when my girls were babies. So long as you block all other inviting areas off and give them enough litter trays it should be fairly easy to keep them toilet trained.

They are pretty young. Too young i tried to pursuade both old owners to keep them for longer. I have two girls and two boys the girls are from the same litter and the boys are from a different litter but are brothers. THe girls are 8 weeks and the boys are 6 weeks. I have gone out and bought the lactol stuff and a bottle just in case but they all seem to be eating fine and the poos they are doing arent runny so dont think they are too stressed.

Would have loved for them to have been 12 weeks but there was no way either of them would do that unfortunately.

Will go out and get more litter trays asap. Thanks for the advice. Im sure i will be back as im sure that i will end up with loads of other problems that could have been avoided.

Just like im off to the vets with one of the 6 week old kittens as his eyes seem to be permantley covered with his 3rd eyelid.

Grr gets me cross when people let kittens leave so early.

:( :(

I hope the little boy is OK, hope you're off to the vets today with him as that could be a massive problem for all the kittens! In fact I would say get him to the vet now. He's too young ... ugh :(

Hope little boy is okay. I would definitely keep them confined to small area as so young, it will be less stressful for them too. They should be fine with good care and TLC, As you know waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to young to be away from mum, but I've taken rescue kits this young and all good in the end.

Anything you can do to help the mums of these cats to be spayed? Hopefully being done? But maybe you could pas on some rescue numbers if needed?

Good luck!

We have our kittens about a week and a half now and they're 7 weeks old today, similar to your kittens our were way too young to leave mum but they wouldnt keep them any longer.

Because they were so young we were really cautious about them having the whole house to roam around so for the first few days they were just in the kitchen, thats where all there food and toys, bed and litter tray is for now. The first night we had a couple of wees and I moved the litter tray and had no problems since. I would, for the time being just keep them in one room until they are abit more settled and using the litter tray in that one room. Then gradually allow them in other rooms in the house.

After a few days we left the living room door open and they run in and out to play and have cuddles with us and no mess!

Hope the little boy's ok too!

The advice I had when we had a cat who kept using a particular patch of carpet as her toilet, is to place the litter box over the spot to start with, then gradually move it bit by bit every day - until you get it to the place where you want it to be.

The problem with cats toileting outside a litter box, is that they can smell it a mile off. I'm sorry to say, but cleaning it with household cleaners simply won't work, as it is the enzymes that you need to remove - which we can't detect with human noses (but cats can)
You will need to clean that bit of carpet with a specific type of cleaner, and I would personally recommend 'Nature's miracle'. We tried nearly every one on the market at the time we had Merlin, and this one came out tops. It's not the easiest to get hold of, but this company is where we got ours : - Companions Choise Failing that, 'Urine Off' was pretty good also.

If you do notice that the cats keep going back to this spot, then I can guarantee placing more boxes around alone won't help. Good luck!

Well back from the vets with spike and theres nothing to worry about his eyes as there is no discharge and the eyes themselves look clear and clean the vet just seems to think that he may have small eyes and we will just keep an eye on it as he grows but at least its put my mind at rest for now

Also been told that cos his poos are nice and firm and he eats for england then thats a good sign. Have also weighed him today and will keep doing that just to make sure that he is growing as he should.

At least they are not by themselves anyway so hopefully they should be able to sort out most of the behviour side of things by themselves lol.

Can anyone also tell me how to encourage them to use the nice new cat tree i have bought rather than my curtains lol

Oh I'm glad he's ok as for the question about the curtains well thats the 60 million dollar question, mine still try to shin up the curtains now and they are almost 2, all you can do it drag strings/toys up and down on them and encourage them to play on and around them. Still better the curtains rather than your legs :D

hmm tho my legs will heal and the curtains wont lol. Was gettin my little girl to play with them round the cat tree and on and up it earlier lol. She was that happy to do it that once the cats had got bored and gone to sleep she was still doing it bless it took me an hour to get her to realise that theres no point in doing that without the kittens being there lol

Wonder if it would fit a 4 year old child on it lol
