Hi All,

My springer spaniel, Freya, is in her first stage of labour (first time litter). She shredded all her newspaper etc about 5am this morning, has been off her food since yesterday and generally shown all the signs of going into labour (panting, heaving etc). Its now 4.15pm and she is looking really tired and as though she has no energy.

Have offered her lactol and some water with glucose which she has refused, so no really drunk anything since about 5pm yesterday. Have been in touch with the vet, who last checked her on Tuesday and all was OK. Rang them yesterday to give update on her and they said if she hasn't had the litter by tomorrow morning, bring her in.

Starting to get a bit worried about her now as she seems to show all the signs one minute and then go right off.

Any advice / comments etc welcomed!!

thanks

Sarah

Im sure you must be feeling quite anxious,Fingers crossed all goes well with whelping.Alot of dogs seem to prefer giving birth at night,so hopefully things will move on this evening. Trust your dog and trust your instinct,if you are at all worried call the vet for advise. Good Luck:)

If you are very close to your bitch it is likely you'd notice signs of labour quite early. My bitch has shown signs 36 hours prior to whelping, on and off.

just keep in touch with your vets and if you're worried take her in to be checked over, or better still, call them out.

The panting stage in my bitch went on for 17 hours, we sat up all night and watched the cctv camera. Shes also stopped drinking/eating as they are well know for emptying themselves before birth. My bitch didnt eat for a day, that was the first sign and we knew she was going into labour.

-Good Luck

Thanks everyone!

Have rung the vet (who have been brilliant!) and all seems to be in order. Freya's definitely in stage 2 labour now - heaving heavier but no water sack/discharge from her vulva as yet.....God this is nerve wracking LOL!

She keeps having little "naps" and then a restless/re-nesting session. Only thing she may have a problem with is being too tired to push - she's carrying a large litter - and if there's a particularly chunky pup to heave out and few more behind still to go. Have got vets mobile number etched into my memory and they have said to keep them updated so they're aware of how she's doing.

My other half is on stand-by with the tissues too - not for freya but for me LOL! Having said that.....he's just as soppy over her as me!
