Dog has to stop and rest regularly during walks

Fifi is now 10 years old and a cross breed beagle/griffon. When out for a walk she will sometimes need to stop and rest once or several times or sometimes not at all. After resting she will either continue walking briskly as if nothing had happened or she will walk slowly, sometimes just a few steps before resting again. We have visited the vet several times with this recurring problem and had many test carried out but no solution.

I'm writing this in the hope someone here might have experienced this with their own dog and can throw some light on what's going on. I find it increasingly worrying as she ages. Fifi takes Forthyron for hypothyroidism. Thyroid levels last tested in February and all ok.

Thank you for responding. She is slightly overweight, has lost a little but still could do with losing a bit more. But excess weight doesn't explain why she can sometimes walk 2 kms without stopping and other times cannot walk the 200 meters to the end of our lane without a rest.

The heart test showed her heart is fine but x-ray showed she does have a narrowed trachea. The vet says if the narrowed trachea was causing her to stop then she would be panting at that time, which she isn't. Fifi also had tests for myasthenia gravis.

I was going to suggest pain, has you vet not considered arthritis?

This may be her way of telling you she's hurting.

Our dogs joints have pretty big forces going through them particularly if they have had active lives. If it is arthritis have a look at Canine arthritis management online. Such a great resource.

Keep us updated on how FiFi gets on x
