Hi all! Newbie here. We are looking at buying a kitten but will be first time cat owners and have no idea what we need to be looking for when liasing with breeders/sellers. Can you help point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!
There's a lot of irresponsible people breeding their moggies and then blaming covid for them letting their cat out to mate.
They then let the kittens go to new homes far too young (under 12 weeks) with no vet work done.
Far better to support a good rescue for a moggy, the smaller ones especially that keep them until the appropriate age, vaccinate & neuter before rehoming.
Hello and welcome, your on the path to becoming a slave
stay clear of pets at home sites, unless they are registered breeders which you can check out. Or if you know of the breed you want, go straight to the registered breeder like @OrientalSlave or go to a rescue centre if you want a moggy, there are thousands of kittens and adult cats needing homes! Also look at breeds which would suit your lifestyle and home, example British short hairs are very calm and layed back, perfect house cats. Do a little research into breeds.
Sorry but there are quite a few respectable breeders who advertise on Pets4Homes, including me. If the kitten is advertised as registered with the GCCF and leaving at 13+ weeks, vaccinated & wormed, it's a kitten to consider.
There is a whole lot more to buying a pedigree kitten, but being sure it will be registered is the first step.
I will add one thing to the above advice..........Many rescues are still stuck in the 20th century and if , like many owners , you are not comfortable with allowing free roaming you may find you are turned down as "not suitable".
Please don't be put off by this as there are many smaller rescues that are more up to date with their rehoming procedure and will be quite happy to allow this .
Sadly many potential owners are put off by rescues and turn to pet sites looking for a kitten which doesn't help those already in rescue.
You are right the majority of 'breeders' on Pets4homes should be avoided, but the information is all there to pick the ones worth starting with. But not all breeders who register their kittens are what one would wish - it's just the first step, to make sure they register their kittens.
And it's also well worth while if you want a pedigree contacting the appropriate breed club(s). They are all listed for each breed on it's GCCF page.
Most important of all, it's worth waiting for the right kitten regardless of if you are looking for a registered pedigree or a rescue cat or kitten.. It's one of the areas where 'buy in haste, repent at leisure' is so, so true.
Depending on which part of the country you live in and the tier system just come in today, if you are looking for kittens now, it may be difficult as both rescues and breeders may not be allowing sale or adoption of cats and a lot of rescues will not allow cats to go around Christmas.
I would suggest you don't look to buy other than registered breeders as others have said or adopt a rescue as there are more cats now in rescue than there were before this year. Even rescues sometimes have pedigree cats for adoption.
