Kitten in Season

My 5 month old kitten has just come into season, how long will it last? Do they keep up with the meowing all the time?
Thanks

She will most likely keep the meowing up for about a week. Book her in to be spayed as soon as you can but explain to the vet that she is calling - in season - as some vets prefer not to spay at this time. Do not let her outside and be extra vigilant when doors or windows are opened as calling cats are usually very good at escaping.
As this is her first call it's hard to say when she will have her next. Some call regularly every 4 weeks, some every 2 or 3 weeks.

Don't forget a lot of vets wont do it that early. Fliss was 11 months old before she reached the weight that my vets (and a few others I tried) insisted on.
I am astonished you had to wait that long. What weight did they insist on and was this recent or many years ago?

If the OP's vet says she is too small I suggest some ringing round. The CP have a page which can be useful though it's not up-to-date: Cats Protection | Neutering | Find an Early Neutering Vet

My vet who I found via that page will neuter from about 1 kg, and since this kitten has started calling it's vital in several ways (including the OP's sanity!) she is neutered ASAP.

If the OP books her in for between Xmas & New Year she is very unlikely to be calling then.

And yes, the noise and possibly slutty behaviour will continue! I've also noticed a lot of rushing around, a bit like teenagers noisily promenading to draw attention to themselves.

Mystique was spayed on Tuesday, she is 6 months. Since I took her home, I was searching for a vet who will spay her at this age. Many vets I called said they will only spay at 1 year old, others that they can spay at six - seven months but only after first heat. I live in Poland.
I searched Polish cat forums and found the best surgeon in Warsaw, highly recommended and very experienced. She spayed my girl before her first heat.
And my girl doesn't have to wear a jacket! Other vets told me she will have to wear it till stitches removal.

Maybe OP also isn't from UK?

That's a very fair point. Was just wondering what the OP's reason was. Some people don't realise their vets will neuter before 6 months
Our local - and very expensive - vet flatly refused to spay before 6 months. We found an Easipetcare vet that offered early neutering and had our little girl done at 16 weeks. Apart from a much longer journey we saved about £30 and she was back to her cheeky self in 2 days!!

Is there really a need to refer to their instinctive behaviour in this manner? Maybe it's just me but I find cats being referred to in this manner, when they have no control over their actions, as rather degrading & insulting to them.

She's hardly got a choice in what she does... :(

You are right they don't have a choice, but when you see them backing up under a jaded tired male it seems a very accurate description of the behaviour.

Any reason why she's not been neutered?
Leila was spayed at 6 months. I think it's the norm here. She hadn't had a season.

Hiya Pebbies hasn't been neutered yet as my vet wouldn't do it until my kitties (I have two sisters) were 6 months old. They haven't been outside yet as we decided to wait until they were neutered so they wouldn't be looking to go out after their op. I had no idea they could come into season so young.

Same here most I spoke to say they need to be 1kg... mine can weigh that at 8weeks old lol So quick and easy, 1 min op on my 3boys at 10weeks old, fully recovered in 2 hours, back going mental and eating, the vet did a student visit with that litter, had people watching and learning as its a lot easier than older cats :) Im very pleased, he is a brill vet, hopefully more can learn from him and go on to do it!

No reason to wait until 6 months, nothing magical happens at that month lol :) I would call them, and tell them they are in call and you need it done, a few weeks is nothing! Or try another vet :)

They must not go out until they are done, so glad you haven't let them out! :) Really they should be at least 10-12months old, teach them re call, they can come into call at 3 months old, just depends, my vet has neutered a pregnant 16week old cat in japan before :(
