Hey all

Haven't been on in a very long time, been busy with dogs and work  anyway just found out I have a Ovarian Cyst!!

A few months back I had lost some weight but noticed I had a hard belly when I led down, I just put it down to change of diet and bloat  after about 1 month it seemed to of got bigger and harder, so went to the docs who said she'll book me an emergency ultrasound scan........ That took a month to come thru  had the scan Wednesday and was told to book an appointment with the docs for a couple of days to get scan results ,so as soon as I got home I rang the docs, was told soonest I could be seen was Tuesday 2nd October ..... Far enough I thought and kind of for got about the day and sat down for dinner when I get a call saying they need to see me urgently :scared: I pooped myself and went down at 5pm that evening.
was told I have Ovarian Cyst.... 24cm long by 13cm :scared: its so big its pressing on both my kidneys which is stopping them working properly.
Got to see Gynecologist on the 8th.

I know they won't be able to save my right ovary, I'm just worried that when they open me up that they won't be able to save my other one, obviously their going to test it for cancer :scared:

I now look about 3months pregnant and constantly needing a pee from it pushing on my bladder.

I'm only 24 and haven't started my family yet... Just worried that I won't be able too.
I know they are common but has anyone else had one this big? Xxxx

Sorry to hear your news. I get ovarian cysts occassionally but they tend to burst by themselves (which can be a little painful!) and have never had 1 that big before so am not much help.

Hopefully, when they remove it everything will be fine. I can't see how the other ovary will be affected as a cyst tends to only affect one ovary and it is removed in such a way your other ovary should not be fine. But that is a question for your doctor tbh!

I was at Uni with a girl who had a huge cyst, she looked really pregnant (she was about 21 at the time) and it was removed. She had since had 2 children with no problems so it does not seem to affect fertility, but I understand this would be a worry for you.

When you have your pre-op appointment make notes of questions you want to ask and ask the doctor then. They will be much more able to help you with those type of questions. Good luck and big hugs!

Bursting ..... Ouch :scared:

I've spoken to my doctor and she did say it won't effect me conceiving but there's always that worry.

I suppose I'm more worried about it being cancerous because cancer is a big thing in my family.

Keep having dreams of random people giving me their eggs and my belly being cut off

So sorry to hear that. If my memory is correct I posted a piece about this on the Health section a while back...

One of my relatives had the same as you've got. Keyhole surgery. Not like the old days.

Don't worry, you will be okay.

Thank you :)

Was told because of the size that it won't be done by keyhole, will need a cesarean cut :scared: not too bothered about surgery ..... That kinda fascinates me

they can actually opt to drain them , have you discussed this with your gynecologist ?? i know they offer this treatment to pregnant women , so i cant see why your case should be any different. maybe because its so large they have actually opted to remove it but definitely worth asking about being as you havent started a family yet. but opting to drain comes under debate as to whether it releases cancerous cells into your body , dependent on the type of cyst.

Will definitely ask, didn't realize they could drain it.
Thank you.

Ouch painful.:( my hospital told me before we found out my tummy issues were my gallbladders fault that I had an ovarian cyst, we later discovered thanks to another gynnecoligyst that the one who said I had an ovarian cyst lied. When we mentioned it she said rubbish I can tell you there is no ovarian cyst there at all. Hope it's sorted for you soon.

they can drain them yes , i had quite a large one drained (filled with old blood YUK!!) when i were pregnant with one of my children , to be honest i were relieved this treatment was offered because i were dreading the thought of an operation so soon after giving birth (as if you havent got enough going on:rolleyes: :D). it would be a shame if you have to loose one of your ovaries for the sake of a simple procedure that hadnt been offered when you havent yet had the chance to start a family. mine never came back either , they can often do though after they have been drained.:) it is definitely worth talking through with your gynecologist though , seems so needless IF they can drain it plus your whole recovery will be much quicker:)
best of luck with everything:)

Hey all.

Well since I last posted I've had more blood tests, CT scan, appointment after appointment... And I still have the cyst.

All the tests are clear for cancer :D
My CT results show its mainly fluid filled but has some tissue strands and enlarged blood vessels running across it, it now measures 26 x 10 x 19 cm

I'm back to see the gyno on the 19th to discuss surgery some more.

Anyway I've been keeping track of my bump with pics.

August, September and October.

Hiya :)

Well what a coincidence! I came out of hospital just last Friday after a 2 weeks stay.

I had a large cyst like you (mine measured 23 x 19 x 20 by the time it was taken out). I have PCOS and get them now and then, though they usually drain themselves. This one didn't however and something had to be done.

If I were you I would forget about the appointment route and get yourself to A&E, complain of severe pain and discomfort and they will get on with the op.

I went to my doctor the week before I was admitted, she tried to do a smear but couldn't (before realising it was a large cyst), and after palpating my tummy arranged for me to have an emergency scan. I waited 2 days then rang the scan department myself. I was told my appointment was being made for the follow Wednesday, when I explained I was in a lot of pain they magically managed to get me in for a scan and hour later lol. Then I was told 2 days later when I called that the results would take 7-10 days to reach a specialist, who would then review the results and 'grade' my case to arrange an appointment. Basically it was going to take weeks to be seen by someone again.

Well I explained to the appointments department that I was in a lot of pain (which I was :( ) and simply could not wait weeks. Her advice was to go to A&E. I was admitted the the Gynecology ward that night :) It took a week for them to run tests and decide the course to take ... then the following Tuesday I went in for my op. I was warned that I could lose 1 or both my ovaries, or worst case I could end up having a full hysterectomy :( They couldn't see on my ultrasound or contrast CT scan properly so they were going in blind so to speak.

I shared my conserns for the high risk of infection with me if they cut me along my bikini line for the op, which is what they wanted to do and they had a meeting with a few different departments and decided to go a different route. My op involved them draining nearly all of it trans vaginally (I think, if I remember right) and then they removed the cyst laparoscopically. They did also take some biopsies around the cyst while they were there, I'm still waiting for the results of those and of the biopsy on the actually cyst. They also did a 'clear out' on me too as I had miscarried a few months before and there was some left over tissue :(.

I warn you now, the pain when I came round was immense, however I am a large lady, I was told my surgery was complex and involved 18 members of staff on the surgical team. It also took them several hours to complete the surgery whereas it should have only taken a couple I believe.

1 other thing ... be sure to ask for anti sickness drugs as soon as you come round in recovery, and be sure they give you the maximum dose daily for at least a few days. When I woke upon the ward later that night I felt sick. They were short staffed and I asked about 6 times for anti sickness meds. They didn't get them to me in time and this resulted in a night from hell with projectile vomiting (all over the 5 nurses stood at the bottom of my bed ) and hell on earth as they had to move me to change all my bedding and night gown to clean up.

My surgery was really a nightmare. You have youth and otherwise good health on your side so hopefully your surgery and recovery should be a lot better :) For me I'm 12 days post op, still on the maximum painkillers they will allow me to have and my stitches (5 lots all over my tummy) and wound where the drain was all look a bit pink, so a trip to the docs on Monday :( My stitches should have dissolved 2 days ago but they haven't!

Guess what arrived in the post yesterday? An appointment to see a gynecologist for the 13th of December to discuss my ultrasound results  I just hope all my biopsy results come back with nothing synister to show.

Wow, didn't intend to type so much

I have left a few bits out, but you're welcome to PM and I will give you my phone number if you want to talk about it some more. I wish you the best of luck hun. xx

So very sorry to hear about your cyst.
10 years ago my Daughter had one removed. The consultant knew about it some years before, but he said it was too small to worry about. She is 41 now. When they finally operated on her, it grew so rapidly, just like yours, it was the size of a full term baby & they drew 9 litres of fluid out of it before removing it. They also removed her ovary, but she still had normal periods afterwards. It turns out her other ovary is sub fertile, but as she's never wanted children anyway, it wasn't a problem.
All cases are different & you must chat to your consultant & GP about the ability to have a baby later, after everything is healed.
My Daughter, as I said, didn't want children, but the consultant did tell her it was possible with only one ovary.

I am hoping you get your op soon Tulz, as having a cyst that size must be uncomfortable.

Try and not worry about what the op entails, it is pretty starighforward, routine surgery (you should be in and out in 2 days). Please try and not listen to the amped up scare stories ;) !!! And hopefully they can save your ovaries, it is amazing what surgeons can acheive these days!
