What do people think of this diet?

The reason I'm asking is because I myself have had a very bad experience with it and so wondered what you all think about it.

My rottweiler was fed on the diet from a pup by the breeder and so we started to continue this diet for the first few days of taking her home as not to change the diet too rapidly. She ended up with food poisioning from this diet and was incredibly ill and at 8 weeks old she was lucky to recover from it and it not effect her growth too much.

Has anyone else had a bad experience? Or have you had good experiences with this diet?

:)

I feed Jake raw, and he has never looked better. He is allergic to grains, and therefore looked horrendous on kibble, with hair loss and sores around eyes and muzzle, and constant ear infections. He has never had a problem since being on raw, no hair loss, no sores and not one single ear infection. I will look out the pics of him when he was kibble fed...

As to the argument of 'wild wolves only live to the age of...', I hate that. Wild wolves have a life that is FAR different to a dog. If they get injured, or get a disease, who is there to help them? No one. If our dogs get injured, or get a disease, who is there to help them? US! Wild wolves also have to live in a difficult terrain, trying to catch prey and survive all manner of weather conditions... Is it any wonder that they generally don't live as long as a pet dog? I don't think the average lifespan of a wolf can be attributed to the food in the slightest!

i don't feed raw (i feed arden grange sensitive dry and naturediet wet to the daxi's and vitalin to the gsd) but have recently started giving raw bones to dai to help keep his teeth pearly white as i have tried plaque off and toothpaset wipes for dogs and nothing has really worked on him so i'm trying the raw bones and natural chews like tripe sticks and bulls pizzles and that's working so far (it's early days as he's only had the raw bones since yesterday) and only has a chw for half a hour twice a day then i stick the bone back in the freezer :)

I feed raw. Novak has a lot of tum problems. Even on high quality wet and dry. He's not had so much as a blip on raw. Even stuff that upsets him when processed doesn't cause issue.

It's cheaper. They have minute poo's one a day. They love it (Bailey had a bit of a phase of not eating but stopped giving beef and no issues since). So for my two it's the best diet.

If, however, your run of the mill dog owner goes into a butchers shop and asks for bones for the dog then 9 times out of 10 this is what they will get, so called marrow bones, usually beef hip or thighs which are completely unsuitable for domestic dogs.

Such bones are not part of a raw diet, they are a treat that ill informed owners occasionally give their dogs without knowing any better.
i went to the butchers yesterday to ask for bones for the dogs and got two racks of lamb ribs and dai loves them :)

Odd to resurrect this thread. Shame I missed it originally. Did lou3 actually qualify as a vet, I wonder? Barking Heads is not top quality, IMO. I'm surprised a nutritionist would recommend it.

To suggest that our dogs will drop dead at age 5 because we feed raw is utterly preposterous! What a dumb thing to say! And if dogs shouldn't be fed raw, please tell my lot to stop chasing bunnies and eating them! God knows what Bear would do with the deer he keeps chasing! :p

I gave Ted some Nature's Diet for the first time today - the chicken one, I defrosted 3 of the nuggets and mixed it in with his usual dry food. I just got home having been out for a couple of hours and he's thrown it all up. I feel terrible. Could he be allergic to it or should I give it to him again?

Worried and not sure what to do

unless things have changed I didn't think you could qualify as a nutritionalist, in fact I thought anyone could call themselves that. Also if you have had training in nutrition you would know that dogs don't need carbs so why would you recommend burns which lets face it is nothing more than an expensive bag of rice.

Camsie, it isn't naturediet you have given but natures menu it sounds like. You shouldn't feed it in with his current dry food but feed it in a separate meal. If you wish to start giving some raw food then you could start with something like the freeflow chicken mince made by prize choice that PAH do if it is easier for you to source there for you.
