      Yay! Congratulations! Clever Aspen.

I've no idea! I have nothing to compare it to so really am not sure how far behind where we should be we are. I think I'll record us having a go in the garden and put it online to get opinions actually. We had a horrid, horrid experience at ringcraft a few weeks back so I am wary to go to that one again. It's our first show in two weeks though. Although, it's the open show where she's had to be entered into a junior class, so it's purely for practice - still nervous though! x

I bet it's because it's been so hard to do it for so long that the quick has been able to grow as long as it has. Something I noticed the other day though that I thought was a bit odd... the 2 middle nails on each paw are much shorter than the "outer" 2 (if that makes sense!)... the quick on the those middle 2 is shorter so have been able to get those nails much shorter. Wonder why that is! I think the tip-tapping that I can still hear (wooden floors throughout!) is definitely those outer toes!

Hi, thanks for the reply :) This last week I've been doing them almost every day lol and yes I do move from nail to nail, doing a few seconds on each one at a time. I was just looking at them a minute ago (am a bit nail obsessed at the moment!) and the quick in each nail seems really long but there's still about 1mm of actual nail before each quick... could I go a little further then do you think? Am just so wary of hurting him and him reverting back to how he used to be... ie. a terrible baby who wouldn't even let me touch his paws initially. Will definitely get some of the prep. H (will make husband get it!), does that really make a difference then?

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it :)

Hi Dober, hope you don't mind me messaging you but I had a query I thought you might be able to help with :) I don't cut Alfie's claws, I have to use a dremel style filer on him as he's such a baby ;) After many weeks of hard work we're finally at the stage now where he will just lie down and let me do them... hurrah! I've literally now got them as short as I can without hitting the quick (that's the good thing about a dog with white/clear claws!) but I remember you saying once that the more you clip them the quick will start to shrink by itself... I was wondering if this applies to filing them too? Only, while they're hugely improved on how they were, they're still not as short as I would like... put it this way, I can still hear him walking on the wooden floors. But looking at them just now, if I continue to file I'm going to hit the quick and I can imagine that would hurt and we've worked so hard... I'd hate to undo all our good work :) Thanks :)

Hello again Dober! I am not sure if you received my reply to the message you sent on 5/6/13 at 11:46pm. The reason I say that is because in my notification box it was listed as an unapproved visitor message. Anyway I wanted to make sure you knew how grateful I am for the advice and also wanted to let you know I clipped her nails again today. I also applied the cream and she is doing much better now. Clipping her nails is much easier now that it needs to be done, I think you know what I mean. Before it was kinda a luxury. Thanks for your help and concern it is invaluable to me and my doggy. I am gonna send you a couple pics of her in a separate message in case that's why it didn't go through.

Greetings Dober I've searched this and many other forums for advice on how often I can clip my doggies nails. I took her to the desert today and she had a great time. When I got her home the was limping and almost couldn't walk. She is a very healthy 4 year old bull mastiff. Since summer has set in she has become more lethargic. I clipped the **** out of her nails today afterwards and after reading your thread about cutting black nails I know your are the person I want advice from. Please tell me your opinion on frequency of nail trimming. Her nails are pretty long and although not touching the ground when she stands they are real close. I need to do it again as soon as possible and get them under control because she is sore and my heart is hurting seeing her in pain. I am leaving after sending to get the preparation H. For all other needs my doggy has I am the provider and love doing things to better her life. Thank you in advance sir you have magnificent canines.

About 2.5 hours lol ended up in the next village :-) found some great paths though - posh houses and lovely ponies. I recon 90% of the walk was public right of way. I took a naughty detour around a crop field to find anther path as I hit the A6 and didn't want to put Millie on lead and walk back along a road lol :-) There are plenty of shorter routes but was in a walking mood lol x
