Just spoke to OH. As he said, we walk in places just as likely to have adders. Tiptree Heath has warning signs up. So I don't think it's a problem. If you're ok with it, I am.

Im so so so excited to meet Bess now!!! And you too lol. Just to let you know (although i dont think its too much cause for concern) that we were told this evening on our walk that an adder was seen on the path to the park where we are going tomo at about 630. Im pretty sure itll be gone by 10ish tomo but i just thought id let you know in case it changes your mind!

Im sure theyll get along great. Basil hasnt met a dog yet that he doesnt like.In fact when we met up with Goldenshadow's Milo he was humping him in excitement so ill be very surprised if he doesnt try that with Bess but dont worry, he hasnt got anything to back it up with, if ya know what i mean ;)

Im sure you dont need to apologise for Bess! She sounds like a dream :) and you do a lot of training with her. I bet shes better behaved than Basil even though she half his age!

Bess is actually quick to train. Show her something three times, like sit or down and she's got it. Never had a dog which learned so fast. But she's also got much more of her own mind than the other dogs I've had. She's fun though.

I think setters can be very very quick to learn and embed some behaviours, both good and bad. They can equally take a long time to learn even simple stuff and because of that it be equally long term hard to undo the wrong behaviours too. If that makes sense after a glass of wine :-)
Where I live we have 8 pairs of setters and only two singletons that I know of. Talking to my hubby the other day, after to of them, I couldn't think of ever having another breed since I now 'know these do well'. We did have a Gordon Setter years ago, but that couldn't have been a worse 'first dog breed' if we'd tried!

Hi, sorry - just logged back on after ages and seen your reply. I keep mine calm by calmly handling them and work their little minds to a frenzy with learning stuff. I do normal gundog stuff as well as the silly stuff (taught one to walk backwards in a straight line and the other to bow, one very wet and rainy day)

Thanks for the comments on my site! Very kind. And yes I have had an English setter before but I'm finding Bess a bit of a handful! She wants so much attention! Any tips on how to stop her trying to be a lapdog would be welcomed!
