Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

I am going to try to breed mata mata turtles and understand that these are very hard to produce babies and would like to give it a go but this speices need dead leaf litter and the bottom of the tank before they will started to breed.

Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

I don't know of anyone who has successfully bred these in captivity. Yes, they require a blackwater set up and feed almost exclusively on live fish. Adult size is approx 18inches, so you will need a very large enclosure. They are not an easy species to keep.

Do you keep them already? If not, buying a pair in the hope of breeding them is somewhat ambitious... but I wish you luck.

Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

I am starting a turtle farm in the uk for the pet trade and conservation groups
to try to get endangered species back on the map 25% of my profits are going back to conservation and 50% of my breeding stock will be going back to the countries were turtles are becoming endangered ie mata mata, fly river turtles(pig nosed turtles)etc.

Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

Could you send me more details? I and a number of friends and associates are already working with endangered turtle species, particularly those from Asia. I know your project would be of interest to them.

What species do you keep so far?

Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

breeding pairs of northern long neck turtle (macrochelodina rugosa),Fly river turtles/pig nosed (carettochelys insculpta), Worrell's turtle (emydura worrelli), Soft shell turtle's (Pelodiscus sinensis) and will have a trio of alligator snappers turtle's (Macrochelys temminckii) in the next 4 weeks. These are my breeding turtles at the moment but will hopefully have over 40 species in the next 6 months. I have got some contacts in asia where i will hopefully get more asia species soon. Once the turtle farm is up and running in the next 6 month i will forward you all the details about my company and what species we have in stock.
many thanks dan

Re: has anyone got mata mata turtles

Have you successfully bred the species you've mentioned? (particularly the Fly river and the worrelli - which incidently, I wasn't aware there were any worrelli in the UK or Europe!)

Would love to see photos of the set-ups and particularly the hatchlings.

I have some breeding groups, and may have surplus adults available. PM me for details.
