outdoor tortoise?

i know a few people with tortoises and know people who have previously owned them and they all say they live outdoors.

well hubby wants a tort and ive been reading about uv lamps etc but everyone says they live outdoors and dont need uv or heat lamps.

sorry if i sound dumb i just want to know why some keep them under lamps and some live outside in all weather.
want as much info as possible

Re: outdoor tortoise?

most people i know tend to put them in hibernation in the winter as there appertite reduces and you make sure there empty when going to sleep as the food can go off in there tummy and kill them if not careful. They put them in there out building or shed to help keep them safe from foxes. I know there are different types that may have different needs so it may be worth reading up on the type you want.

WOW she is brave huge monsters they are, need a huge heated shed when they get bigger, they can dig under fences also.

If you want a tortoise outside all the time it can be done. But i really sugest having a greehouse with a heat lamp for colder days

Spring wake up from hibernation colder days so heat lamp might be needed
Summer - outside all the time
Autumn - heat lamp will be needed and wind down for hibernation
Winter - hibernation
