Unhappy how risky is hibernation

hi
my boyfriend has just hibernated his two tortoises for the first time and he is very worried about them. I understand that putting your pets in the fridge for months on end must be really terrifying, but is there anything that I can tell him to reassure him? How risky is the process really? Does anyone know any stats about how many pet tortoises don't make it through hibernation or anything like that? I would love some help if anyone can offer some, I really want to make him feel happier about this. He didn't hibernate them last year, so he's very worried about this.
Thank you

p.s they are horsefield tortoises, incase that helps anyone.

ive never hibernated mine, as ive never seen the need. i say that unless your looking at breeding them, or something like that, there really is no need to hibernate them. the risks are minimal if done correctly, and due care is taken. but to me, its just not worth it :/

If your tortoise hibernates in the wild it will need to in captivity. Please read this tortoise trust article on safer hibernation
