Easy medium sized tortoise breed?

Any recomendations? And an idea of how big they would get. Also how much time should they spend outside and any good tortoise care websites, books etc?

Re: Easy medium sized tortoise breed?

erm hermans and horsefield are the best biginner tortuses.
they both get aroung 12 inch, so fairly small.

they live inside in a tortuise table or indoor rabbit cage, only let them out when really hot and in a run(don't let them free into your garden!)
and they will need a light for indoors (sologlow, or hobby somthing like that)
there substarte should be herbifloor, and a shallow bowl it can walk into (because they mainly drink from there bottoms!)
hope thats helpful!

Re: Easy medium sized tortoise breed?

I have a hermanns. She/he is great and easy to look after! But you will need a basking lamp and a uv light, to make things easy go for a Mercury Vapour Bulb, it has both things is one. They might be quite expensive but worth every penny. You'd need an indoor enclosure which could be an indoor rabbit cage for when there small. You'll also need an outdoor enclosure for in the summer. When there outside they get there uv from the sun, so no lights needed.

They eat most weeds, but I'd go on google and search for edible weeds and you should be able to find a list.

Hope this helps. Anymore questions just ask!

Re: Easy medium sized tortoise breed?

As already recommend Hermanns are good for the beginner.

My fellas mum has 5 rescues, which all live permantley outside. They have a specially built area around a tree with a brick built house which has a basking light inside.

Re: Easy medium sized tortoise breed?

Thank you guys. I've been looking at the Hermans they're very cute and from the looks of it not terribly hard to look after. I have a lot of time to research them anyway before I even think of getting one.
