Putting Tortoises in the garden

Hi
Asking question for my neighbour.

She has a 3yr old Herman Tortoise which at the moment it live's indoors. She is wanting to put it in the garden but we have a big problem with Red Ants.
Will it be ok in the garden with the ant's or are they going to bite him all the time.
Any advice will be grateful.
Colette

Re: Putting Tortoises in the garden

we have had spur thigh & herman tortoise for 40 years now..after hibernation,
we keep them in the house till its warm enough for them to go out..
they have a heat lamp and a uv light in the conservatory..
if its too cold outside it slows their digestive system and can cause problems..
We too have red ants and so far they have not been a problem at all..
