My lovely lil baby :)

hey there, im hew here, and thought id show you some pics of my lovely tortoise Chiyoko (name means "Child of a Thousand Generations"). ive had her for about 3 or 4 years now, after buying her from a friends shop. i know she was young when i got her, but the guy didnt know her exact age (a year or under i think). she lives in a vivarium under my desk, that is freely accessible for her, and she has the full run of my bedroom when she wants to. she spends warm summer days out in the garden with lots of fresh vegitation in a large enclosure. the object in the pic is a 5p coin, for size comparison

i really do love her to pieces ^^

edit: one question i forgot to ask. how well do tortoises mix with others? Chiyoko is obviously established with me, but would i ever be able to add another with her? same species? different species? same age? how well do they mix? thanks

Re: My lovely lil baby :)

Your horsfield is lovely

Tortoises are solitry animals in the wild and only really bump in to another tortoise on there long travels in the search of food or a mate.

Horsfield male are notoriously aggressive and 2 males can not be kept together. Also a single male with a single female won't be a happy pairing either as males are also very randy and the horsfield mating rituals are often very violent affairs with blood being drawn on a regular basis. One male to seven females is a good ratio and even then the male may need to be seperated to give the females a break from the constant mating. Females are less violent, but will still be aggressive to each other whilst obtaining dominance.

Different species and sub species of tortoises should not be mixed together due to the differences in humidity, diet and heating requirements between species. Also as they would never meet in the wild they can pass over potentially dangerous pathegens.

Also sub species can interbreed, which is generally discouraged

This is a link to an excellent website, designed for horsfields in the uk, which you may find interesting
