hey just a quick question....

how often do you guys hav to clean out your terrapins tank? i have 2 baby terrapins, a yellow belly and a map turtle and there tank gets so dirty within 2 weeks, is this normal?? i use a filter and i also use biological aquarium supplement, water conditioner and water freshener.it just seems crazy how quickly it gets filthy!

Re: hey just a quick question....

I have 4 YBS in a alrge tank with 2 filters going

I have to clean the filter sponges every week and a bit as it gets messy inside...if you want to make sure its crystal clean water then get an external filter, try get one thats made for cleaning a larger tank than yours, for example a 150ltr tank will be cleaned better with a filter for a 250ltr tank

Turtles are very messy creatures! My 4 make the filters I have go absolutely disgusting! But thats the joys of having them and I wouldnt change them for the world! They even eat out of my hands...Just the male 1 doesnt like my other half's brother, the only person he tried to bite haha!

Re: hey just a quick question....

You need an external canister filter on a turtle tank, rated for at least 3 x the volume of water you actually have in the tank. e.g. if you have 100 litres of water, you want a filter rated to deal with 300+ litres.

Internal filters cannot hold the amount of bio-media required to cope with turtle waste.

Get a canister filter and fill it full of bio-media, I find Alfagrog to be the best.

Maps and YBS are strong swimmers so even as youngsters should have as much water as possible (deep) to utilise.
