turtle care

Hi i'm new to this and am looking for some advice. i was recently given 2 yellow belliies (i think that what they are) and im not sure the best care for them. i was told to take them out the tank and put them in a bucket for feeding is this right? also how often and how long are they supposed to bask for they dont seem to do it very often i dont know if theyre struggle to get up on the basking area. l'm not even sure what sex they are or how old. other than that they seem to be fine and are a great edition to our family.

Re: turtle care

Make sure they can access their basking area.
My two were unsure of it at first but love it now. I leave my light on for 1-3 hours. They don't stay under the whole time but come and go as they please.

I put food straight into the tank for mine and everythings fine. It probably needs cleaning more often than if you were to take them out the tank but I don't find this to be a problem.

Re: turtle care

You don't need to take them out of their tank to feed them. Dropping turtle food, blood worms etc, from the top of the tank is great for them. They get to swim around their tank to catch the food and dig for the worms once they have sunk to the bottom.

You'll just need to have the right sized filter for the amount of water you have in the tank to keep the water clean. Taking the filter out every week and giving it a through clean can help to keep it cleaner for longer too. I also take out 2 buckets worth of water each week and replace with 2 fresh buckets of water.

Yellow Bellied Sliders like to bask under a basking light. You can set up an area for this easily by putting a rock in the water so the top is out of the water. In my set up I have gravel along the bottom of the tank and 1/3 of the tank is built up with large rocks for them to climb up out of the water onto a dinner sized rock that is out of the water and above this is where I have positioned a basking light.

I only have the light on a few hours in the evening just because of how hot it can get and how close it is to the wooden lid.

There are loads of good care sheets for Yellow Bellied Sliders on the internet if you google it. They are quite hardy animals so are not too hard to look after.

Hope this helps
