turtle help

right i have two musk turtles. I aquired them when my OH died a while ago now, and i know very little about them. So the question is... 1 how do you tell males and females apart? one is significantly bigger than the other...2 will they have babies? i dont want this and im assuming they cant be castrated lol I dont know how old they are but we have had them nearly two years.

Re: turtle help

the first one picture is definately of a little girl , the one in the second pic looks like a boy is the base of his tail much thicker than the end ? as i can`t really see from the photo as for breeding females aren`t ready till their about 9 years old males i think it`s 3 or 4 years , as for breeding i think with these guys it`s all about dropping / increasing temperatures to stimulate the breeding process. i`ve never kept these myself so hopefully someone more experienced will come along and advise you the best way to go about not allowing them to breed without seperating them nice little turtles

Pelusios is on a distinguished road
Re: turtle help

Both females. They will lay eggs whether they have been with a male or not. Just dispose of them.

You should however, look to providing a nesting area (a box filled with damp sand and moss) out of the water, for them to lay their eggs in, to prevent them becoming egg bound.
