Exclamation Urgent help with turtle :)

I have recently got some new turtles and by God they are AMAZING!

But I stil have a few problems...

I don't know what kind of turtle they are...like what species

I have attached some pictures and hopefully you guys should know.

I've also added a picture of my turtles' habitat. It is nice and large but I know I need a land area but I don't know how i can do this. Is there somewhere I can buy them. Here is a link of a video...it's a silly video but if you look at the tank, their land area is ideal. Any ideas?

Re: Urgent help with turtle :)

You need to provide a platform as they have no rest area you can build this by putting layers of flat slate you can always place two small flatish rocks under the slate but be sure there secure you dont want any accidents. Build up so they can at least have there head out the water if they want to or the logs you get from fish shops placed in can serve well.. Another good tip is to fed your turtles in a large basin as they can be messy eaters. Be prepaired as some turtles can be the size of a dinner plate. Make sure they have a varied diet as this will stop them getting soft shell. My friends takes hers out and cleans the shell with a soft cloth each week to keep them tip top. Sorry cant help with breed right now as my turtle book is away and dont know by looking at pics. They are very nicely marked. My friends turtles are partual to srimps and white bait and a little dog food occassionally.

I think they are Yellow eared or Red eared turtle's, not to upto date with my turtles, but as Sullivan has said, they really need a resting area, for the time being untill you are able to get anything permanent, try and find a heavy plant pot or something like, for them to rest on, if you can find a big'ish one you can break it in half and use this stacked up, but they really do need something

Re: Urgent help with turtle :)

Hi James, your turtles look very similar to mine from what I can see (the only difference is that the shells on yours are a lighter colour, but my turtles are at least 9 years old and their shells have darkened to almost black over the years). Mine are called Heiroglyphic river cooter turtles (Pseudemys concinna heiroglyphica). They are very similar to the red eared but the stripe behind the eye is yellow not red and heiroglyphics aren`t supposed to grow quite as big but mine are both a fair size now (over 8 inches from front to back of shell and I bought them when they were the size of a 50p piece). I`ve seen a lot of them for sale over the past couple of years so it seems to be a popular species. I`d be surprised if yours aren`t heiroglyphics. Whatever kind they are I`m sure you`ll get a lot of pleasure from them, they can be really comical sometimes.
