I feel concerned!

My schools art department has an aquarium and in it is a single terrapin, it is constantly moving around it's tank, looking like it's struggling to stay at the surface, it has two rocks and that's it, nothing to get out of the water on. Is this OK? I always feel sorry for it. The women who looks after it was staring at it in a blue box today as if she had no clue what it even was....

Re: I feel concerned!

some terrapins are good swimmers from day one and some need shallow water so depends on what type it is, yes it needs a basking area to come out of the water if it wants. The basking area should have a heat and UVB light over it

Re: I feel concerned!

hello terrapins need dry land to move around on aswell and the water should not be deep just enougt for the terrapin to be able to swim,
as In cold water terrapins become sluggish for which they need heat and an aquarium heater with thermostat that can maintain the temperature in between 75 to 80°F that is 23.8 to 26.6°C. This can keep them happy and playful.
the tank should have ultraviolet light (which provides Vitamin D) blindness or deformity of the shell can occur. UV-B and UV-A combined .

not all terrapins need deep water most muds and musks are bottom walkers and are better in shallow water, and also adult terrapins wont need a heater as long as it keeps 19/20C thats good enough for adults
