what type of terrapin have i got?

Hi all i have just aquired 2 terrapins as the previous owner can no longer give them the attention they need due to health problems. i have no idea what they are and how old. i have been told that the larger 1 is female and smaller 1 male. but am not sure at all. if i upload some pictures is there anyone out the that can identify them for me. what sort of photos do you need to tell what they are.
e.g from the front, underneath, from the back, the top????
i am at a loss, tried looking through the internet and don't seem to be able to find what i am after.

if any one can help then it would be much appreciated.
