Tommy Tortoise

I have just gotten engaged and my future mother in law has a Hermann's Tortoise which, I have just been told, becomes mine and my new fiances when we get our first house. He used to belong to her mother, so he's a bit of an old man now.
I'm a total rodent addict - and have never once thought about having any other animal - so I'm freaking out a bit.
Tommy is an outsider, he sort of just roams about the garden all day, eating the buttercups and the occasional tomato, then digs himself a hole in winter and reappears the next year.
That's all fine, as I wouldn't know what to do with him otherwise - but would he be ok being moved to a different garden after all these years?
Just need some basic moving advice really - as my Callum's used to him bing around, so he'll be doing most of the looking after!
Thanks

Re: Tommy Tortoise

Personally I wouldnt recommend leaving a tortoise out in a garden all day, mine was recently overturned by magpies and half pecked to death, and hes an old man 60 plus and quite some weight. if you can have an outdoor run then an indoor place for cooler days/ beginning/end of the season, mine has a cupboard with the lamp and a little ramp going up for him. Much better to be hibernated somewhere with a consistent temp 0-5 degrees, like box in the garage with a digital thermometer you can check every few days.Think carefully before you take on the care of a creature who is almost a legacy to generations of tortoises that have been condemmed to inapproproiate living conditions, get a book, read up about them.

Re: Tommy Tortoise

It's my tortoise and our families beloved pet which happily lives in our garden and has done for 42 years. My comment was aimed toward those who replied or messages with negative comments about how we care for our member of the family. After navigating through this site there are many people who are very helpful, but also some who can come across as rude and obnoxious.

Posts must have been deleted all I can see is what I would consider good advice.

He would still be better outdoors in my opinion but if you have magpies then a netted enclsoure is important. 60 is not old for a tortoise, I have an 80+ female that still lays each year. Please, never let temps drop to 0 degrees as this can cause blindness and brain damage. Torts are fine in cool weather so long as there is some sun. It's the sun that warms them, even on cold days, it's called thermoregulation.
