Tortoise buying advice

Hello I'm new to this part of the forum (normally its cats).

I'm about to move into my first house with a garden and I've decided that now is the time to fullfill my life time dream of owning a tortoise. I've spent the last 20 years reading up on tortoise care but I'm finding that most of it is contradictory especially now that they're selling tortoises in tanks!

Herman's have always been top choice for me, mainly because they were the ones I saw as a child, everywhere says they're easy to care for and hardy but I'm hearing nightmare stories from other people about tortoise hibernation or escape acts. I'm definitly not interested in keeping them in a tank with a heat lamp their whole lives but I wouldn't even know where to start.

Also a while back somebody posted about some good tortoise breeders in britain (I'm in the Midlands), I thought some were particularly good as they checked the tortoises new homes and I don't mind going on a waiting list. My animals are usually rescue but I have found that there never seem to be rescue tortoises which I thought was strange considering how long they live.
