As with most reptile equipment, what the pet trade offers is inadequate and often too small to keep the animal it is intended for. Often people make do with what ever aquarium which is on offer. Most serious reptiles keepers wind up building something of their own because there's very little else the pet trade usually has on offer.

I've already posted some information on keepings these terrapins provided by Wikipedia which is pretty informative and has a section on keeping them in captivity.
Red-eared slider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I hope this will help.

Re: what tank

I worked with unwanted terrapins ( when the teenage mutant turtle craze began) and they are surprisingly demanding and the one I had was the size of a dinner plate

If your going to feed oily fish, you need exellent filtration. Without it the water will foul very quickly. Oily fish is good for them, but they don't get that much of it in the wild. Oily fish you get from the sea and not usually in fish found in ponds and rivers where you find these terrapins.

Thats why we had a drainage system and could change their water everyday
