Amber always lies down to eat, with her bowl between her front paws.

What does your dog do. ???

I would always encourage a dog to stand while eating ensuring the bowls are of a comfortable height for the size of the dog.

Amber is 10 now and has always eat lying down, it has not caused her any problems. I did ask the vet about it and he said that wolves, wild dogs, and most predators eg. lions, tigers all lie down to eat their kill, so there is no problem with a dog lying down to eat it's food.
