My kittens are now three weeks old.....I bought a special kitten playpen from Amazon and it worked for a while, but now mum is keen to get them out ..... if I give them the freedom of one room mum will have to be in there with her litter tray and have food - however, they may choke on her food or litter. Should I allow mum to decide how much freedom they have ?

Also, the weather is currently swelteringly hot and I am wondering if there are safe ways to keep them cooler? I've seen stay cool pet mats- should I buy one?

I wouldn't use cool mats on young kittens.

Our kittens start eating mums food at 3 weeks, we keep them in a pen which mum can come and go from, until about 4 weeks when they're solidly litter trained and then they are free in the room.
Mum continues to nurse for the 12+ weeks kittens are here.

Gosh, I looked for absolutely ages for an Occicat before I got Argentium, figured they would be able to cope with the tiny tyrant that is Lithium the Burmese. I couldn't find a breeder for love, nor, money & here you are with your stunning cats.
