Prompted by another thread I was just wondering if it's ever safe to leave a dog alone in a car.

Obviously I'm aware that leaving a dog in a car during even warm days can be incredibly dangerous, but I was just wondering what the rules were for winter? Is it a blanket rule to NEVER leave your dogs alone in a car, or would it be Ok for example to leave a dog in a car for 5 minutes, during the winter?

Under what circumstances, if any, do people here leave their dogs in the car alone?

Obviously I'd never leave McKenzie in the car on a warm day.

I do occasionally leave her in the car if I need to pop in somewhere on the way to or from a walk with her - e.g. popping into the post office when I know it will be quiet, or going in to get petrol. If I'm going to be longer than about 3-4 minutes, then I don't do it. And I always park as close to where I am going as possible.

As well as the heat aspect, I'm always aware of opportunities for theft.

I've never left mine in the car. If I go somewhere I can't take the dogs then they stay at home.

I never leave my dogs in the car unattended. Not even at shows. For me, it's just much of a risk of them being stolen.

If I had lockable car crates, where I could leave the tailgate open I'd consider it, but still probably wouldn't leave them for more than 5 minutes.

Not even for a second, I would never live with myself if they werent there when I got back. I either leave them at home or someone stays in the car with them.

Dave goes in a crate in the car and I do pop into a shop if I need to and leave him. Never for more than a few minutes and never if it's too warm of course.

I personally don't see a problem with it if done with highest consideration to your dog, but understand why some people won't.

I don't leave Bruno on his own because he was really nervous of the car when we got him, he's beginning to love it (now he realises it is the portal to amazing walking places like the beach) and will jump right in and settle.

However if we stop too long, at lights or in traffic he will start to cry a wee bit.
We have stopped at the shops before but one of us has always stayed with him.
I imagine if i left him alone he would get quite upset. So i don't.

HOWEVER! If he was sound with the car and the weather wasn't roasting or (a rare occasion up in my neck of the woods) some other extreme I wouldn't think much of cracking a window and nipping into the shop for 5 mins or so.

I wouldn't leave my dog tied up outside certain shops though, certainly in certain areas, reckon he'd get stolen... much safer in the car!

i haven't got a car yet, but would never ever leave the dogs alone in the car doesn't matter how warm or cold the weather is, just don't understand why anybody would think it's ok to do it

For those who leave their dogs, even for a few minutes. Would you leave an expensive mobile phone, or a couple of hundred £s on full view to everyone? To some low lifes, our dogs are just posessions that they can steal and sell for their next fix. It isnt just about safety from the heat, you only have to look at all the dogs stolen whos storys appear on here to know it goes on, these are dogs who were relatively safe in their own homes, so stealing them from a car is just easy pickings to these people.

I have left my dogs in the car, its only ever for a few minutes and never on a hot day.

My car is usually set to freezing cold so never have a issue of overheating.

I leave my dogs in the car. No one could steal them because they are very aggressive towards people who approach the car bark like crazy at anyone walking past. If someone did break a window to get them they would run off and find me.

Yup. Rupert was left in the car several times on the journey from UK to here. Not like my hubby had a lot of choice since Rupe wasn't allowed in the services. Same thing'll happen with Spencer when we go back. Sure, it's a risk but not sure what else we're supposed to do.

Nope, not even for a minute. As a breed he's very susceptible to both heat and cold so there would never be an appropriate time to leave him, so I don't.

And even if that weren't the case, I would never leave our iPhones/laptop/wallets on view so I'd never leave my very expensive dog to tempt potential thieves either.

It's just not worth the risk IMO.

when we took the the dogs on holiday to Norfolk once, we left them in the van when we went for a meal, we found somewhere where we could park the van right outside the window where we were sitting so we could see it the whole time... the dogs were in a padlocked cage and there was no chance of them overheating...it was october & the weather was cr@p & freezing lol

Yes, I do leave mine in the car (obviously not when it's even mildly warm though) - and it's only ever for up to fifteen minutes max.

It'd take a brave person to try and steal one of mine from the car ;)

Yes. If I need to nip in Tescos (the parking is underneath so always in the shade and cool).
    Never on a hot day.

Yeah. Mine are left in the car if I need to pop to the shops. Generally though I stay with them and my Mum goes in. But Dude barks and growls at anyone approaching the car anyways. Windows are always down and I don't leave them in on really hot days.

Yes I leave my dogs alone in the car but obviously not when it's hot.

Because Tremor has a travel phobia, I frequently take her with me to Tescos, etc.

I also leave my dogs in the car at shows (and have been doing so for years). You actually have no choice if you work more than one dog. We all do it at obedience shows and there has very rarely been any incidents over the years.
