I work at Manchester and Cheshire dogs home, we have induction days that volunteers get invited to before they start volunteering, we dont mind if people are shy so long as they can help out, I would imagine if you are asked any questions it would be things like, have you any experience with dogs, what time can you devote to helping out, what areas in the home would you feel more comfortable working in, ie walking dogs/helping socialise, meet and greet, office work, cleaning the grounds, they may not let you actually clean out kennels etc unless you have had some training though, or help with feeding.

Those shelters with websites may have pages on volunteering with them, with job descriptions and application forms, ours does.

Mo is right with the questions they will probably ask, also they may want to know why you want to volunteer to work in the shelter.

Always think about your answers in advance, even write possible answers down to help jog your memory and have a couple of questions you want to ask them prepared as well, shows initiative.

    Good luck

I went to the dogs home but got the induction times mixed up. The manager took time out to give me a personal tour which was great. As a dog owner I found it much less upsetting that the first time I ever went. I think I see it differently now than I did. There all lucky to be there at least they are safe, warm and hopefully will find there forever home. Im waiting to hear off the manager about going into groom some of the dogs so fingers crossed I can help to rehome them by making them look stunning.
