Re: Millipied!
Millipedes make great pets but they like company, so you'll need to get two! Don't worry about getting overrun with babies because they're qute hard to breed. Instead of a tank, I keep mine in a tall cage; they like to climb up the sides (in the wild they climb up the bark of trees). They eat dead leaves (oak is their favourite), also slices of orange and cucumber. You need to give them a shallow dish of water to drink from. Keep them in a warm room and they should be fine!

Re: Millipied!
I have two which are only around 6 inches long at the moment. I house them in a 45L underbed storage box. It's not one of those quite flat ones, it has got about 25 cm's of height.
I use coir (coconut husk) as a substrate with lots of decaying oak leaf litter mixed in and some sphagnum moss over the soil in parts. I have some branches from an apple tree in there, which allows them to climb and also some cork bark for them to climb on and hide under. They do like to have places to hide. A water bowl is essential, but I do provide one - just one of those dishes you put plant pots on, the smallest size. It's very important to feed oak leaves, they need the chitin for their exo skeleton. I feed cucumber, tomatoe, banana, melon, dandelion and also goldfish flakes occasionally. A source of calcium is also good. I do provide mine with heat, the room they are in can get chilly at night but if it doesn't drop below 65ishof in that room, that will be OK. They really do thrive at warmer temps Millipedes can be housed alone, they aren't particularly intelligent animals, so it wouldn't be cruel to do so. However, you will find that they will be more active if you have 2. |
