2 New Pink Toes

I kinda jumped in at the deep end.

Little story -

Was talking with my housemate about getting some spiders, she replied she had a friend who was selling 2 Goliath Birdeaters. So, I was like OK i'll buy them. Anyways, come Friday I picked them up and bought them home. I then done a little research/pulled a few care sheets, and I find they're Pink Toes and not Goliaths like he said they were. Ended up paying £120 for 2 males and their tank. I was ripped off basically.

Now comes the funny bit, I really don't like spiders. It's not for the fact they're spiders, it's just the fact they bite (they bit the previous owner on a few occasions, and always injected venom). I have a fear of being bitten. Larger animals like dogs etc don't bother me as you can see when they are getting nasty, but the idea of 2 fangs just digging into my skin makes me uneasy.

So, how should I go about handling them? Will have to at some point to clean them etc

They're both roughly 2inches in body, and 3inches including legs. They don't have a water bowl currently, should I add one?

Is it normal for them to fairly inactive during the day? Current tank size is roughly 2 feet wide, 1 foot deep and 1.5 feet high.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

Pinktoes as they are not known to be aggressive as there fairly docile only thing about them is the speed.

As for handling/cleaning with them being like you said only method to use to clean them safely is what i do for my trap door and baboon is use a clear container that fits over the spider and once done that place a piece of carboard then containter lid then remove in container then clean your done.

As for handling best thing to do is place them in a empty bath with the plug closed so no escapes as this will give you a idea of there speed so on, if you decide to handle and they do bite there are gloves you can buy for this.

Now for water and the setup anything under 2" water bowl not needed only misting walls and one corner of substrate.

But with yours a milk bottle top will be ok that's what i use for some of my slings filled with a small-medium pebble prevents it tipping or crix drowning in the water.

Now for a set up you need something with a bit more hight such as a terrarium of say 30x30x40 as with pinks hight is a must with plenty of braches & fake plants.

Being inactive during the day they can be thats how my Versies and Avic are so it's quite normal.

Do you have pics of them to see if they are deffo pinks and not something else also if they are housed together seperate them not a good idea together as you may find one fatter.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

You wouldn't have wanted 2 Goliaths, they'd have to be housed seperately and as they can attain a leg span of 12" you'd need adequate space. They are far from a beginners spider.

I can't believe someone would rip you off so bad. Like jen says lets see some pics to check they are what you think they are.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

From what he has posted i honestly dont think there pinks as my pink slings never try or tagged me but that's mine.

Only thing with mine are the speed of them so it would be a good idea to see a pic of these spiders in question to be 100% sure.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

I've got a Pink Toe as well As you say they're known for their speed, not biting.

By the way you've got a few spelling mistakes in your signature

At the moment I've got:

Curly Hair (Brachypelma albopilosum)
Pink Toe (Avicularia sp. "Guyana")
Chile Flame (Euathlus sp. "Red")
Goliath Birdeater (Theraphosa blondi)
Venezuelan Sun Tiger (Psalmopoeus irminia)
Mexican Red Knee (Brachypelma smithi)
GreenBottle Blue (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) - This one is arriving today.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

Forgot all about this

They ARE Pinktoes. They are extremely quick too.

So I cleaned them out the Sunday just gone with no hassles. I got my housemate to give me a hand (both wore gloves just in case). Neither of them fancied leaving their tank, but with a little bit of gentle coaxing they walked on to our hands no problems. Was a bit nerve wrecking when one decided he was off on a stroll up my arm lol

Since cleaning them they seem a lot happier. They have both eaten at least one now, and they both are quite content to sit on the glass cleaning themselves. They're quite a bit more active now then they use to be. Quite often I'll see them going for a stroll around their tank (one even fell lol don't know how but he did)

I added an water dish. They didn't pay any interest to it at first, but just 5mins ago caught one having a drink from it.

No fights as of yet there has been a bit of posturing when they've both wanted to sit on the same bit of glass, but beyond that they tolerate each other very well. They're sight is pretty poor, they're forever walking into each other or the big log which runs up the middle of the tank.

No signs of them webbing though?! I thought they were suppose to?

On the whole though, they are completely different spiders from when I first got them.

Scratch that bit about them getting on, they just got into it. Legs reared, fangs out etc one fell from a good foot or so right into the water bowl. Sibling rivalry is getting nasty it seems. They do seem intent on winding each other up, if one heads to a corner the other shortly follows. Defiantly need to separate them?? Would be a shame, but I don't want either to get injured.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

Do it pronto as you may find one a little bit fatter and the other gone which would be a shame as they are beautiful spiders.

Do you have anything to keep one in if you dont put one in a tall plastic container with a lot of airholes until you get another terrarium you can use the plastic storage boxes will cost about £5 from any poundstretcher shop but buy the ones with the lid that opens with two doors in the middle like the exo terra thats what i'm going to using when my pinks get so big there £5 as the other's are a clip on lids.

And while your tying to find a new home for one remove it as you don't want any problems to happen whist you ain't there so remove one now please for your sake and spider's will not hurt one in a container whist you sort new home for it.

As for webbing some take longer to do it iv'e noticed with my slings versicolours and avic they like to find the right spot for webbing which can take some time and they will do it when they get a bit settled in.

Good luck.

Re: 2 New Pink Toes

Hi for Guyanan Pinktoe same as other pinktoes a high home with plenty of braches/folige/cork/bark .

As for food if anything like mine which are versi and avic they will eat anything you give them, mine loves large maggots and the flies from the maggots and other things such as crickets/locusts.
