Re: Baby het albino boa photos

I think many of the different colour morps/mutations are really beautiful and I understand why many people desire to keep.

But from a conservation point of view they are a nightmare. Every time we establish any species of wildlife in captivity there's a race to breed mutations. To be the first to breed and the first to own them. The problem is we are destroying them as a species. No longer can we release them back into the wild. We are living at a time when species are becoming extinct faster than ever. Perhaps animal breeders should think more about this and try to maintain species as close to their wild state as possible. Perhaps mutations once they occur should be kept separately from their normal counterparts to protect them.

I would much sooner go to see a collection of several different species, than a collection of the same species, but different colours. For all the beautiful mutations you find, there are some pretty ugly ones too.

I agree with what you say to some extent , but nearly every boa morph originate from wild caught specimens ,so if they occour in the wild producing them in captivity chance nothing to what already exists

Thats absolutely right they do natural occur in the wild, but not all of them and certainly not some of the hybrids you see in captivity these days. The problem with captive selective breeding is the animals change too quickly. To the extent they no longer resemble their wild ancestors. If you look at the many hundreds of domestic breeds of chickens with their huge diversity of colours and shapes. " They are all technically Red Jungle Fowl". Again look at many hundreds of breeds of domestic pigeon. " They are all technically Rock Doves".

In the wild almost all of these mutations would be pick off by predators and the ones which survive, survive because of environmental conditions and help a species to change. But they are very very few.

I just feel with the accelleration of species becoming extinct these days, it would be better to keep mutations from their wild counterparts.
