Re: Snakes as pets
I have to agree with cat001, Corn Snakes make an ideal starter snake, although there are other snakes that make good starter snakes, I am slightly biased as I have a Corn Snake.
My corn is almost 3 years old, she is very placid, she likes being handled by myself and my not so light handed 7 year old son. She's never as much as flicked her tail in anger. When she decided to go exploring the inside of my computer (which was swiitched off at the time of her escape) I was expecting her to strike or even shake her tail after all the pulling and tugging I did to get her untangled from all the wires within, but she remained as placid as she usually does.
they are fairly cheap to keep, but initial startup costs can be a little on the expensive side. The bare minimum setup should be:-
Vivarium/RUB/Suitable housing container.
Heat Mat
Habistat (Thermostat)
Thermometer (Preferably dual display for both warm and cool ends of tank)
Large water dish (big enough for snake to curl up in if required)
A Hide (preferably 2 hides, one for each end of the container)
A few bits and bobs (branches, rocks, driftwood chunks) to make the container interesting for the snake and to give your snake more places to hide.
You can line the tank with newspaper for easy cleaning, but Corn Snakes like to bury so I prefere Aspen to cover the bottom of my tank (about 4-6cm deep).
After this inital outlay the costs plumet.
Mice range from 40p to around £1.50 (this is a wild estimate as I currently pay around 80p for medium sized mice).
Aspen costs vary depending where you buy it.
Feeding 1 correct sized mouse every 5-7 days, a little longer when they get larger (Sid is on 1 mouse every 7 days)
I currently pay around £5 for an eight litre bag which does 2 changes.
Have a good look around and read up on some of the informaion that is out there.
The one thing I would highly recomend is:-
If you decide to get a snake ensure that whatever you are keeping it in is set up first, make sure your temperatures are right before introducing your snake to their new home.
