Eggs??

We have 2 corn snakes each in a separate viv. One on top of the other. Both snakes (Colin and Tallulah) have been acting 'strange' these past few weeks but we just put it down to more day light and change in season. However this morning i discovered what looks like an egg one of the viv's in with the heat mat. The snake has been rearranging her living area. She has tipped out most of her water and it now making a 'nest' in all the wet substrate!

Ive never seen them both this active. Is this normal to lay random eggs? She was a rescued snake so im not sure of her age. Didnt actually know she was a definate 'she' until this morning!

Thanks in advance

Gayle xx

Re: Eggs??

wow thats quality. Ive had 2 corn snakes in the same viv for about 8 years now and they've never once laid an egg. We don't actually know if we've got male or females but either way ive never heard of any snake that lays random eggs and i know a few snake owners.

how long have you had them? could it be possible that she was fertilised before she was rescued?

Re: Eggs??

Sounds to me like 1 of your snakes has become an adult.

Female corn snakes can lay eggs without being bred and is quite normal, usuall only 1-2 is laid and the rest re-absorbed but occasionally a full clutch is laid.

Keep an eye on the snake and if no more appear then try her with a smaller then normal meal (fuzzie/small mouse) to give her a boost, and also make sure she has a drink as after laying 1 or 20 eggs she'll be de-hydrated.

If she doesnt eat thats fine, just wait till after her shed which after laying is usually about a week and then try again with a fuzzy/small mouse before going back onto a normal sized meal.

Re: Eggs??

Wow thank you, she did shed even though she had only shed a short while before!! She is eatting ok. We had to clean her out because she had made sucha mess with tipping her water every where!! Bless her. But when we got her out of her viv she was extremely unimpressed!scared: But my hubbie said she felt like she had still at least one to lay.

We gave her a warm bath which she seemed to like then put her back in her nice clean viv. Shes settled down again now. (could try spicey food and a long walk like they did to bring on my sister in laws labour!!!)

I was wondering if they emitt any noise when laying because Colin the other cornie we have is in a viv above hers and when this was all going on he was very unsettled trying to get out!!

Both seem a lot calmer this passed few weeks. Which is good.

Thanks for your reply

Re: Eggs??

Glad things have settled down, it is a stressful 2-3 weeks for a female.

Your male probabley picked up on her Pheromones (think thats spelt right, lol), which in turn let him know that she's ready for mating and that it's a breeding female is near.

If your male drop off his food dont worry this is normal mateing season behaviour and can last from 2-3 weeks to 8-10 weeks, normal is around 4-5 weeks tho (my males anyway).

My own males at the min have stopped eating the last 2 weeks for 1 and 3 weeks for the other and my females have filled out ready to breed.

Good luck, and always ask, if we dont ask we wont know.

Re: Eggs??

Snake catcher help!!!

Tallulah is still laying the odd egg!! She still seems rather stressed out!! She wont eat!

As you can see from my previous post she started laying on 3rd April. Poor little bugger!!! Is this normal? I'll ask the question for her... when will it all end!!???

Hugs
